FAR, I a nut shell what Dr. King was all about..

During his lifetime, Dr. King sought to forge the common ground on which people from all walks of life could join together to address important community issues. Working alongside individuals of all ages, races and backgrounds, Dr. King encouraged Americans to come together to strengthen communities, alleviate poverty, and acknowledge dignity and respect for all human beings. Service, he realized, was the great equalizer.

On January 16, 2006, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday, Americans across the country will celebrate by honoring the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Hundreds of thousands of Americans will remember and memorialize Dr. King by participating in service projects in their communities. Together, they will honor King’s legacy of tolerance, peace, and equality by meeting community needs and making the holiday “A day ON, not a day OFF.”

You got me, Far. I thought it was because he was a great orator, with great ideas, but I just found out the other day that he stole all his material.

So I guess it's because, to be politically correct, Blacks need a holiday of their own.:o

A true appreciatarian there.

He spoke & wrote some beautiful ideas & inspired millions to action. I often wonder if he would find it ironic: people taking a day off from work to remember him.

Your statement has no basis in fact. There has never been any claims alleging Mr. King "stole all his material."

Speaking of orators, you might be interested in a speech about Mr. King given by Kevin Alfred Strom in 1994. That is, if you're willing to step "outside the box" and not accept group-think hook, line and sinker.

Why the hostility and venimous labels, sunshine? All I did was post a link to a speech on Mr. King. I never said I agreed with it. Just providing alternate information that's in the public domain. Why does that rate for you to equate me to a "nazi?" Talk about a "hate-filled box." Relax. No need for attacks.

P.S. Does that make the person that made the speech a "nazi" too?

ROFL! Astute as ever, eh Chonsi! The mark of a true teacher! Well, actually, I'm grading papers, entering them on the gradebook and computer, and planning out the week ahead. I like to start the week fully prepared because I don't have any prep periods. I teach all day and work lunch duty, followed by night school.

It's use today or fall behind!:-3

Good idea. Let us know what you find. I was just doing what you plan on; looking at information. I never endorsed the speech personally. The Internet is a big world. Happy hunting. :)

P.S. Be careful of posting anything that doesn't follow forum group-think. Who knows what label you'd get tagged with. If you post anything about abortion, then you might be called an "abortionist."

Here's something to consider:

There are only two national holidays devoted to a single individual. Christmas for Jesus and the third Monday in every January for Martin Luther King. That negates the argument that we haven't collectively put Mr. King on a pedestal and given him psuedo-deity status. But I know, anyone that dare criticize Mr. King in the slightest way is an automatic "nazis" and "racist."

So the children can't have access to all the information, just the material the school systems want spoon-fed so the pseudo-deity status can be carried into the next generation.

Something more to consider, Lincoln's Birthday, & Washington's Birthday quickly come to mind as single individual's national holidays as well. :-2

President's Day. We do not celebrate them on seperate days. I was referring to national holidays were we celebrate one individual on one specific day, selectively. Do we celebrate our individual veterans? No, not even those that earned our highest honor, The Medal of Honor. We have Veterans Day. Why can't we just have a Civil Rights Day to celebrate all civil rights leaders, with Mr. King at the top of the list?

There are plans underway to erect a monument to Mr. King in our nation's capital, something all the other civil rights leaders won't have. Isn't that proper recognition? It's good enough for former presidents and veterans of the the Vietnam and Korean Wars. It seems that celebrating Mr. King has become a pseudo-religion. The celebration has become sacred. If you dare question it, you are evil. I've been contacted by one or more forum members that are refraining from posting in this thread for fear of getting one of those warm and fuzzy tags, like "nazis," racist" or "bigot." That's a sad commentary on debate in our country. We will never resolve the race issues if we can't freely discuss them without adhominem attacks.

Against my better judgment I will address this once. The link ChiptBeef recommended with a challenge to "step 'outside the box'" is hardly criticizing Dr King "in the slightest way."

The page is authored by stormfront.org, a white supremist organization that is quite open about it's neo-nazi ties. ChiptBeef's endorsement of such views is plain. To call an endorser of stormfront.org a bigot is hardly an ad hominem attack.

ChiptBeef, if you endorsement was simply from supreme carelessness, I trust you will be more careful of your resources in the future.

Malcolm X was only trying for self betterment. MLK Was out for the betterment of all. MLK was a founding member of NAACP, and he did much to promote the plight of blacks in the south. Obviously you're not black. Put yourself in their shoes if you dare.

Far Rider wrote: It bugged me last night why I knew very little about MLK and why we celebrate a day in his name.

It was not a federal holiday till 1983. I left school in 1983. I was rackin my brains to remember the holiday in school...

Heres what I found.

The Holiday

"Free at last, free at last

Thank God Almighty, we are free at last"

Each year on the third Monday of January schools, federal offices, post office and banks across America close as we celebrate the newest American national holiday

15 years after Dr. King's death President Ronald Reagan signed a bill into law making the third Monday of January a national holiday celebrating the birth and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

But it was a tough time getting the bill passed

First a bill had to be introduced by a member of the House of Representatives. The Speaker of the House assigned the bill to a committee where the bill was discussed in detail. Meetings were held where supporters and opposers could discuss their positions. The committee then agreed that bill should be sent to a vote. The Rules Committee scheduled a debate on the issue. The House of Representatives then voted on the bill. It passed the House with a vote of 338 to 90. Then it was sent to the Senate

Again the issue of the King holiday had to pass through committees and public hearings before a final vote was taken

There were many who opposed the idea of holiday for Dr. King. America had only honored two individuals with national holidays - George Washington and Christopher Columbus. Many felt that there were other Americans that deserved a national holiday, such as Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy

One barrier to the confirmation was the Senator from Georgia who had denounced Dr. King as a communist

Others feared the King holiday was meant as a way to make up to African-Americans for slavery. Other feared the cost of the holiday, with the extra overtime paid to federal workers who had to work on the holiday as well as millions to those federal employees who were paid for the day

Senator Bob Dole pointed out to those critics '"I suggest they hurry back to their pocket calculators and estimate the cost of 300 years of slavery, followed by a century or more of economic, political and social exclusion and discrimination"

It took many years for Congress to decide to celebrate the holiday. In the years leading up to the official decree many African-Americans celebrated the birthday themselves with a few states declaring King's birthday a state holiday. The bill was finally passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate and was signed into law on November 2, 1983

The first national celebration of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday took place January 20, 1986. This year the King holiday will be celebrated on Monday January 16, 2006. The theme of this years holiday is Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not A Day Off!!

Is MLK controversial sure he is, was he the greatest person in the world, no not in the least, but he is the man that made the majority change their mind set.

Thats worth honoring in my opinion.

After reading more about the man I agree he may have been more militant at first then we recognize, but something made him change his mind and become passive and non violent. I'm a "religious' man myself, I know whats right to do, but my passions seem to get the better of me, sometimes Im able to recognize that and make things right and move on. I can tell you this much, if theses were MY people, I'd have fought and I would not have done it without violence.

It takes a lot of heart to do what he did.
No one person is perfect. He was human. And he had a dream.........

When you post something for informational purposes, it is natural for anyone to infer that you believe such information to be true. That's endorsement. Do your research and it should be easy to avoid such misunderstandings, if it was a misunderstanding. Make the effort to distance yourself from people you don't wish to be associated with, and people won't associate you with them.

The attacks are hardly unfounded.
