".Jewish people are renowned for their business prowess and work ethic therefore they have historically been succesful. This has generated jealousy from the less successful. Being careful with money is not just the preserve of the Jewish people.... ...I believe the Scots are pretty 'canny' too ! "
I posted this yesterday in a now rather 'notorious' thread . My intent was to 'lighten ' things up a bit, but it provoked even more bigotry for which I am truly sorry.
I apologise if anyone found it offensive...there is NO way that it was meant that way. Some of the loveliest people here are Scots or have Scottish connections and I value their freindship.

Bez, dont the Scots use the phrase "Canny Lass"?
What does that mean?
Maybe Clancy or GMC could help us out, i for one never thought your term was
derogatory and i agree with LC, you have always been a positive influence in
the garden, keep it up Bezza x :yh_flower :yh_flower :yh_flower
Just realised, i think its the Geordies that use that phrase.

Don't worry Bez, from what I've seen lately some people here are just itching for a row anyway. Ignore them

That's why we love you Bez. Even when it's someone else that misinterprets your posts, you're big enough to apologize just in case. :-4
Personally, I like Scotts' canniness (I think I understand the word). I alway keep some in the can.

Canny can be used in two ways.
Canny lass: is an OK lass.....(It is a Geordie phrase)
Canny: can also mean being good with money. or some people use
to say your mean with your money
I was born in Scotland and you never upset me Bez. in fact I've never heard you say anything bad about anything. :-4

I have a Jewish friend, she is very smart about her money, she is 30. I think Jewish people are smarter than the average bears.

Hey Bez dont be so hard on yourself.
I just read what the guy said, and understand that you wanted to lighting it up a bit.
I dont find what you said offensive at all.
It seems that this guy gets off being controversial, I think what`s important here is his ridiculous comments about the jewish people.

Absolutely no offence taken, Bez.
Your post was obviously tongue in cheek, and you assigned a positive adjective to the Scottish propensity for money management.
The thread starter was rattling on about Jews in a derogatory manner, and worse yet, he continued blathering after several people (yourself included) calmly and intelligently tried to show him the error of his ways .
I thought your retort was very clever .

I wouldn't worry about it you didn't offend anyone. Who cares what a wee nyaff like him has to say.
We do use the word canny but in a dfferent context as an ca' canny-be careful. or as pine points out someone who is canny is shrewd.
rather than canny lass maybe a gallus wee stotter would be more appropriate to describe you.
