Have you installed any new hardware or programmes, they could cause this.

If so go to safe mode either from that page or pressing f8 while restarting. and remove whatever it was installed.

Hopefully this is your only problem

Sorry just edited while you posted.

Turn off laptop----then turn on again-----should be able to then hit enter using safe mode.

OK------Do the System restore.

Can you get out of Forum? Try closing out Forum and then turn off machine and then restart.

first question: what is the operating system? e.g.

Windows XP Home

Windows XP Pro

Windows 2000

etc?

most of the time, laptops come with (unfortunately) a special OS restore CD - it's unfortunate because that CD is usually designed to do nothing but wipe the machine clean and reinstall the OS fresh - no opportunity to fix it, only delete it all. if you're lucky, your CD might allow you to fix it instead. what make/model laptop is it?

the machine might have a virus.

It says Windows XP...that is all. That would be great if a CD could reinstall it.

Instead of ctrl-alt-del try just pulling out the plug to switch it off (after removing the battery). Then switch it back on (after plugging in again), go into setup using whatever method your particular laptop requires. Set default values, save them, come out of setup and try powering up again.

System restore usually works for me.

Click on start bottom left.

Select settings.

Select control panel.

Select system restore.

A calendar will appear, select a date prior to your current problem.

The pc will re-boot.
