I believe in our freedom of speech. I even respect this tripe as an expression. I think we should exercise our freedom of speech as well, by writing the Washington Post and letting them know what we think of this cartoon, pro or con.

This is beyond tasteless.

Soldiers gave limbs so this bastard could be free to earn a living this way.

I'm disappointed in the Washington Times for publishing this editorial cartoon. I have always respected this paper, and preferred it over the Post. I'm looking for a link today to write them about their bad judgment iand disrespect for our military people n this cartoon.

Look at the message people. LOOK AT THE MESSAGE!!!!:-5
There are lots of ways to deliver a message. This one crossed the line.

This was my letter to the them:

To whom it may concern:

The political cartoon that depicts a wounded American soldier with amputated limbs as “battle hardened” is in poor taste. This reflects upon you newspaper, that I have always assumed supported out men and women who fight in various arenas around the world. By publishing a cartoon like this, it insinuates that you do not support them, but that they are an object of derision. Any person or entity that would take lightly the injuries and deaths suffered by our military do not appreciate the freedoms that they are defending. By their defense of the First Amendment, you are able to print a deplorable political cartoon such as this. I suggest you should rethink your current policy on political cartoons to be printed in your newspaper. I know I will no longer be a proponent of your newspaper, until an apology is written to our fighting men and women who lay their lives on the line every day so you can print cartoons such as that.

I am disgusted! While I understand the written message, it really cheeses me that the satirist couldn't come up with a better way to convey that message.

My DH has had his hummer blown up twice underneath him and lost a couple of close friends. Certainly NOT something to be made light of.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff wrote a Joint Letter to the Editor about it. I can't look it up right now. Can somebody research it please?

With our young men coming home in coffins or mained for life, this cartoon really stirs hurt and anger in most all of us. It is nice to be directed to a means of expressing our utter distaste for their failure in self-censoring.

Cartoons such as these bring back the memories of the Vietnam veterans who returned home only to be spit upon. Between people and media our men and women in service seem to get targeted all too quickly instead of the power that controls them.

That cartoon is severely distasteful. A soldier who has been injured in the line of duty is not something to be made fun of.

When I read that cartoon I saw it as a statement about how Rumsfeld and the Bush administration treat our soldiers, not an insult to the wounded. I think that was Toles' intension.

I'm sure it was. It was just as tasteless as an anti-abortion activist showing pictures of a mangled fetus.

There are many ways to get a point across.

:) AC, you have mistaken which newspaper printed this editorial cartoon. The Washington Post did! And I got a reply already from the Times:

The cartoon in question ran in The Washington Post. I agree that it is in

poor taste; you should send your letter to them.

I just cut out the editor's name. I will post the Post link when I get home this afternoon!

ArnoldLayne wrote: I have to say I read it exactly the same way. A powerful indictment of Bush's administration and Rumsfeld's insensetivity in particular. Yes it's a distasteful image but thats what war does to soldiers and that is how they are treated when they get home very often. I dont see it as an insult to the injured soldier at all.

Unfortunately, not all soldiers return untouched by war and with a chest full of medals. We ought to face both the reality of war and the reality of the shortsighted politicians that send them there, as uncomfortable as that makes us feel. We should be made to look at the pain and suffering soldiers endure and with a bit of luck we may not be so ready to send them off so quickly the next time

While you may well be right, as a military wife who sits home and waits for her husband's tour of duty in Iraq to be over, I think it is very offensive and the point certainly could have been made without trivializing the injuries to members of our military.

Hotsauce had it correct, it was the Washington Post that printed the Toles political cartoon.

And when you bring in to account that this administration does not allow for the "flag draped coffins" to be photographed, and you bring into light how the medical bills are being shifted to the poor vet.....this cartoon brings forth a powerful message.

How are the medical bills being shifted to the vet? I have never heard of active duty military having to pay for war wound medical care.

Oh, I don't know. I have a tough time believing rumor, especially when it goes against something I've had experience with. If you have no source for such an accusation, why make it? And if you do have a source, why don't you show it?

I just heard on the radio that another cartoon ran within the last few days that the radical Muslims found insulting. CNN ran the story blacking out the offensive part of the cartoon, but showed the entire Rumsfeld cartoon that's insulted so many of us. :yh_frustr

Both cartoons were out of place.

But, if we do not express our opinions, and tell the paper so-they will continue to print them. Write to the Washington Post-I sure got a quick reply from the Times when it was stated in this thread it was them. Consumer relations will get their attention.
