Hello...... I am a member of several forums, where I meet very nice people from many different countries, even Egypt.

I have noticed that on a few forums that people seem to spend all of their time on any one particular forum, except when they are at work. Does anyone here ever feel as if they are actually addicted to this or another forum? Some people have even admitted to being addicted to Internet forums. And some people even have marriages and children. Would their marriages not suffer?

Does anyone agree with this, that they have become addicted to the Internet?

I think some people do get addicted. I am a relatively new user. What I have found is that for me, it has taken the places of pursuing a social life. I dont know if that is a good thing. I actually will choose to sit here, instead of going out.

I rarely log off of FG so it look like I'm on 24/7.. !! But I'm not really..

My very first forum was a rottweiler forum. I have made many friends from across the country there and every year we have a major fund raiser for several rescue groups. The last couple of years, I have helped to coordinate the one for the Michigan/Ohio area.

I belong to a Canadian pet forum, a forum full of rescue folks who try to educate people about puppymills, and a forum for military spouses.

I joined this forum because sometimes one just must have an intelligent debate about politics and such that we just don't do on the other forums that I belong to.

I must admit, I have made a ton of friends and my rottweiler friends have kept me sane for the last few months.

Addicted? You bet! But I do try to limit myself to the amount of time I spend on my computer.

Addiction, compulsion, call it what you like. To me it is a lifeline for discussion, entertainment, making friends and getting support. I belong to 2 other forums that are Buddhist specific.

I stay logged in but I do in fact drag myself away to eat, sleep and go to work....such a pain !

I still read, watch TV, go out socialising, garden etc. but have to get straight back here to keep up with everything.

I call myself a forumaholic. I am a member at a lot of boards. I usually hop around to see what's going on where. I'm mostly on in the mornings while I drink my coffee and get woke up before getting ready for work, peek in after work, then a time or 2 in the evenings. I find myself looking for new boards a lot because most of the time I get bored with similar topics and my attention span as I get older is worse than a 2 year olds.:wah:

Being something of a recluse, forums provide me with social outlets outside the workplace.

I belong to 2 forums, and I pop in here and there throughout the day around taking care of the little monsters!

I'm rarely on the computer on weekends because when hubby is here I run away from home as much as I can to get a break from the kids!:D

I am rarely here either, my post count really is an illusion and as for signing on at work... OMG bite your tongue... oh look at my paper work piling up gosh how did that happen.

No I don't think I am addicted I can stop any time really, yeah I can, it matters not to me what Far has to say in a day, or if Raven is on at the same time as me so we can plan our holiday or Jives may be on the brink of a break out story, no no really I never read everthing LC posts, or wish to keep up on BR's facinating posts or anyone elses... no no no not I. Really I can quit, um yeah after 30 days I may be able to be weaned off FG yeah a kind of Forum detox, that's it. Yeah

Sure, people can become addicted to forums, just like anything else. I think as long as it doesn't interfere with real life, it can be a good thing, though. We've all seen and received help, advice support etc, when we needed it from here. It's a community. It's friends. People scoff at me when I refer to my "on-line friends", but they haven't been here and don't know. I'd like to think that the way we are with each other here, is the exact same way we'd be with each other if and when some of us get to meet face-to-face.

At least a couple of the friendships I've made here are very very real to me and one in particular I'd lay down in traffic for.

I guess that's a bit off-topic as far as addictions go, but I feel very strongly about my friends here and if that makes me addicted to the forum, I can live with that. There's a lot worse things I could be addicted to. And have been!

Maybe so. But if someone was "addicted" to doing good deeds and random acts of kindness, you could, technically, call it an addiction. It just carries the tarnish of being an addiction. Not neccessarily a bad thing, though. See where I'm going with this?

I think that forums can be really good for meeting people and stuff, as long as one doesn't go overboard. And actually, my typing speed has gone waaay up. I took a typing test recently, I now type 55 WPM! I have not typed that fast since high school in my typing class!

Okay, here is something that everyone will find amusing (are you listening Accountable?) I used to frequent a forum on the IVillage Site called "All Sides of an Affair". There were women there whose husbands where having affairs. And there were women there who were having affairs with married men. This was years ago. Anyway, I had been dating a married guy and then we broke up. So someone told me about this forum called "All Sides of an Affair. There are flame wars there that you would not believe! I must have been banned from that fourm 50 times. Sometimes me and one of my Internet male friends in the UK would go there and they'd write funny filthy stuff and I'd write some more stuff back, and then the women would get all offended and we'd get banned. It was great fun. But I can't write what I wrote. I'll get banned. LOL! There is also a forum on that site called "MY Affair". So sometimes the women from the "All Sides" board would go over to that board and bash the women who were having affairs. It was terrible. :wah: :-5 :-2

Having been on the wrong side of someone having an affair, and picked up the pieces of other people in the same situation, I guess i wouldn't find the forum you mentioned AT ALL amusing and it sounds like 'poison' to me. I've seen other sites that in my opinion have members that are just plain evil. ....I could say a lot more but I think it would be prudent to quit now.

It is poison, I believe it is still there. It was amusing to go back and see the same old member, the same old arguments, the same hatred as what was there about 3 years ago. The same name-calling and labeling I saw before.

I had to "pick up the pieces of my own divorce" also.

12-Step Internet Addiction Recovery Program

1) I will have a cup of coffee in the morning and read my newspaper like I used to, before the Internet.

2) I will eat breakfast with a knife and fork and not with one hand typing.

3) I will get dressed before noon.

4) I will make an attempt to clean the house, wash clothes, and plan dinner before even thinking of the Internet.

5) I will sit down and write a letter to those unfortunate few friends and family that are Internet-deprived.

6) I will call someone on the phone who I cannot contact via the Internet.

7) I will read a book...if I still remember how.

8) I will listen to those around me and their needs and stop telling them to turn the TV down so I can hear the music on the Internet.

9) I will not be tempted during TV commercials to check for email.

10) I will try and get out of the house at least once a week, if it is necessary or not.

11) I will remember that my bank is not forgiving if I forget to balance my checkbook because I was too busy on the Internet.

12) Last, but not least, I will remember that I must go to bed sometime...and the Internet will always be there tomorrow!
