The crying thread made me think of this topic. The way youve heard it said that some humans will respond by laughing when they hear something incredibly sad, or gruesome. Its a strange protection mechanism the brain seems to have.

My friend told me about a friend who had lost her husband, and what a difficult time she had recovering. It seems he went out one night to go to the store, and never came back. He took his life in a very painful way. Well, I couldnt controll myself. I was horrified. Why would anyone choose that method to kill themselves?" Pills,or carbon monoxide.. or anything but what he did. What a horrible way to die. I felt so so bad, but I laughed.My brain made me laugh. Has this happened to you? What were the circumstances? I hope this topic isnt revolting.

It isn't revolting at all, Weeder. I know that sometimes, during a very serious conversation, a part of me wants to giggle and I have to think of something really awful to stop myself from bursting out into uncontrollable laughter.

I used to be manager in a superstore located on the coast. One day old bloke comes inclaiming there is a dead body washed up on the shore. Eventually we decide he is serious and sure enough there it is .

We call the police, turns out it was an area where people committing suicide by jumping off the Forth Road Bridge tend to wash up.

There we were myself, an assistant manager and two policemen solemnly looking at this body gently banging it's head gently off the rocks when my assistant-himself an ex-policeman turned round and said

"Shouldn't you be down there giving the kiss of life?"

Maybe it was inappropriate and in reaction to the cirtcumstances but it was hysterically funny at the time.

I was totally devoted to my Grandmother. I remember at her funeral, myself and my brother sitting at the front. We were both playing in a band together at the time and my brother looked at the two tiny speakers on the wall and said " The P.A.'s a bit crap aint it?"

I can't explain what sort of coping mechanism was going on in our heads but we couldn't stop laughing.

I sure as hell made up for it outside afterwards though when I realised I'd never see her again.

ah Weeder, i understand! cops are notorious for finding humor in the worst possible situations!
