Accused witches and their cats, excuted during a wave of hysteria and mad religious ferment centuries ago, will be pardoned on Halloween in the Scottish town Prestonpans.

"There'll be no witches hats,dress-ups or that sort of thing - it will be a fairly solemn occasion, Adel Conn, spokesperson for the baronial court that granted the pardons, said yesterday.

Sinday's ceremony will publicty declare pardons for 81 people excuted by burning at the stake in the 16th and 17th centuries for being witches.

The pardons have been granted under ancient feudal powers that are due to be abolished within weeks.

More than 3,500 Scots, mainly women, children and their cats were killed in witch hunts at that time.

Many were condemned simply for owning a black cat or brewing homemade remedies.

Very interesting. I wonder if this has been done in the U.S.?

What a horribly ignorant time humanity lived in at that time.

Hi greydeadhead,

We are further up North. If you look at a map, we are near Sandpoint, ID. We certainly enjoy it up here!

If they had only known that a witch weighs the same as a duck, they could have spared some innocent lives! (for Monty Python fans)

I'm sure lucky they don't burn witches anymore. ;)

I know that - it was such a lovely typo though that I had to mention it.
