What cover versions do you think are superior to the originals?

Here's a few of my favourites so far - I'm still thinking............

"I Shot The Sheriff" - Eric Clapton

"She" - Elvis Costello

"Forever Young" - The Pretenders

"Angel" - Rod Stewart

"Ruby Tuesday" - Rod Stewart

"You Really Got Me" - Van Halen

"Waterloo Sunset" - Def Leppard

"All along the Watchtower" - Jimi Hendrix

"Sorrow" - David Bowie

"Love Hurts" - Nazareth

and it's almost sacrilege, but Joni agrees...."This Flight Tonight" - Nazareth

It's been awhile since I've heard it, but Ray Charles cover of (Beatles) "Eleanor Rigby" was good, I had the privilege of seeing him perform this live about 20 years ago at a local college "Night under the stars" event...

"Pinball Wizard" - Elton John

"Wherever I Lay My Hat" - Paul Young

"Downtown Train" - Rod Stewart (again)

I think Rod is the master of covers

"Have I told You Lately That I Love You" was also good but better than Van Morrison???????

Robert Palmers version of "Mercy Mercy Me" was as close to the quality of Marvin Gayes original as you could get, but again , better????

By the way Clancy, have you heard Frankie Millers version of Elvis' "Love Letters"?

I have a collection of unusual covers. One of my favourites is Stairway to Heaven by Gregorian Monks, I kid you not, it works brilliantly


........and I thought Dolly & Rolfs versions were odd !

Did the monks give a sensitive treatment to "Trampled Underfoot"?

i really like the UB40 version of "Fools rush in" ( i think that's the name) Elvis sang it.

Perfect Circle's cover of Imagine. Only one I can think of right now. It was either Seether or Shinedown that redid Skynard's Simple Man, but it was really great too.

PC's "Imagine" is good too. it's darker. not happy.

I like the GooGoo Dolls version of a Supertramp song.

and Johnny Cash did a cover of a Nine inch Nails song.

LOL, a couple of years back I had heard this song on my television (satellite radio) I had it on "American Folk music" I was tired of the tv, computer, radio, and I was just wanting to unwind.....I thought, " what the heck I will listen to this for a few minutes"........Johnny Cash came on singing this song and I freaked.....lol (this was before he passed) I told a few people and somehow or another I had decided it was a cover because he had made a couple recently (at that time I had heard this)

Until this convo I hadn't checked for sure, check this out...have your speakers on because it comes on with the lyrics........This is not a cover....This is originally by him.

Better? I like both..........I lean to Sinead and then I hear Prince and I like his too.

Well apart from Hendrix, Clapton and yes the Nazareth one, I would VERY much disagree with you on every other one. No one can ever compete with those two Kinks' classics for sure. There are very few covers that I would consider better. Sometimes I find one that I like equally such "You Keep Me Hanging On" by The Supremes and Vanilla Fudge, because they are so radically different. Possible the only exception is "With a Lttle help From My Friends" by Joe Cocker. Having said that, what exactly is an original? To me it is the first version I heard, which often means some of the Sixties groups versions of blues songs were my favourite. Sandie Shaw over Dionne warwick is a good example with "There Always Something There To Remind Me" for example. I am sure that many youngsters will not have even heard of some originals that are being covered by the likes Westlife, Boyzone etc.

Not a patch on Ray's version! Sorry. The only Kinks' cover that I like almost equally is "Days" by the much missed Kirsty MacColl.:guitarist

Same goes for Neil Diamond. After the huge success of UB40's cover of "Red Red Wine", he now does a reggae bit in the middle

I liked the Kinks too.


Although Dave has had a Heart Attack about a year ago his hair is still black. We hope to see him back touring soon. As for me, I wish I had that much hair , but like Dave's it is still dark:yh_clown

Kinks are my fave band and Buddy Holly my favourite singer.

Robert Johnson wrote a lot of great songs that have been covered by other artists...
