Does anyone have a specific phobia and how do you cope? Do you avoid it or do you try to deal with it. I have a few things that freak me out but nothing that I would quite avoid. I would hate to be stuck in a dark room with no light at all or I would hate to touch a snake!!

Any you:

Here is a list of all kinds: http://www.phobialist.com/

Scroll down, some of them are really strange.

Even for sleeping I need some light. I'm such a baby :)

I don't mind snakes at all.

I used to gather the workforce (about 35 people) together for the last 20 minutes of the week and give them news, praise, info and generally have the crack so that we all had a good weekend. I used to put all the booze and gifts given to me at Christmas into a raffle so that everyone got something. I did this for a few years and then suddenly, one year, halfway through handing out the goodies, I had to suddenly excuse myself and get someone to take over as I was just overcome with panic. I've never been able to speak in public since. No idea what that was all about.

I'm also Arachybutyraphobic (the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth) ;)

It's weird if I take anything like that it doesn't knock me out at all, it makes me hyper. Hmm... I must be strange.

Not snakes, lizards, spiders, bugs, heights, blood, the number 13, ladders, umbrellas, spilled salt, nothing, except....

Being cut.

I was opening boxes when I was young on a job. I couldn't find a safety blade, so I used a razor scraper. The kind with the full edge exposed. I was cutting full force when I hit a staple, the blade jumped, and I slashed my forearm down to the bone, 8 inches long.

The skin on a human is stretched pretty tight, so when that happened, a hole the size of a softball opened up and the entire muscle fell out in two pieces. I had to pull hard to extract the blade from the bone, because it was imbedded. The blood poured out of the hole like a garden hose on full. I had to gather up my muscle and try to reinsert it into my arm.

Unfortunately, only myself and the manager were in the store at the time. I went up to his office and through a head-high wondow told him, "Hey boss, I cut myself." He said, "You know where the bandages are." I replied, "It's a little worse than that." He said, "Let me see it." I went inside the office and took my hand off the hole, blood poured out and covered the entire surface of the desk. He went stark white.

By then I was in shock so I asked the ambulance drivers to turn on the siren. They oblidged. I laughed mightily all the way.

It took 400 stitches to put me back together again. I had fun watching the blood spurting out and hitting the ceiling. I wondered how they were going to clean that up. My mother passed out.

Then, after weeks of pain, like a dumb kid, I took out my stitches myself. The wound burst open and I had to go through it all over again. The scar is deep and wide, thanks to that, and it hurts me every time the weather changes.

Later, in another job, I was slicing pepperoni with a slicing machine set to slices of a quarter inch. I looked away for a moment and heard a "ping". that was the sound of the tip of my thumb and part of it's bone being clipped off. I had a devil of a time finding it in all the pepperoni. It looked just like pepperoni with all the blood on it.

Still later in another job, I dropped a glass bottle. Trying to catch it before it hit the floor, I made a grab. I caught it just as it exploded on the concrete. As I looked down, I saw the entire tip of my index finger sitting in the glass. Luckily, this time the bone was still sticking out, so I just picked up and stuck it back on. I still can't feel anything in that finger, though. It makes typing feel weird.

Feakin' cuts.

I still use blades, but I am scrupulously careful not to cut towards myself. I also have to remember to breathe.

spiders. seriously. not even funny. ya know how boys think it's funny to tease girls with spideys and snakes? not funny. all my boys know that if they were to PLAY spiders at me, I'd likely go into convulsions and die... seriously. it's completely irrational. I can't control it... it's probably the only thing in this world that can make me scream and cry... (like a girl!)

lol. Same thing with my girl. I saw her staring fixedly at the stove once, frozen solid. I came over to see what was wrong and a very large wolf spider was staring back at her.

I got a paper towel and got the spider. The second the spider was gone, her eyes rolled back in her head and she fainted dead away.

I thought that only happened in the movies.:wah:

I wan't the sucker dead and removed from the premises... My ex would pick up the safe one and put em outside... fine... as long as you keep hold of it... current hubby likes to miss em... NOT FUNNY! If I know it's in the house I can't sleep. I run on a high sense of delusion in order to catch zzzz's as it is. And what's funnier,, If you aren't me, but lookin at me.. is I have to run away from the scene... I don't even want the dead spider in proximity to my person. BLUCK!

Ablutophobia- Fear of washing or bathing

some would say that i suffer from this. i say They suffer.

i do actually dislike fuzzy spiders with extreme prejudice. but it all depends on how close that furry f**ker gets before i notice him. if he's on the wall, across the room; fine.

if he's on the opposite end of the couch i'm laying on; not good.

I am deathly afraid of spiders, too. I can't look at them on TV, and if there's one in the same room, Bullet has to get it right away. If he doesn't, I don't sleep.

Also VERY claustrophobic. If I even get hugged by two people at the same time, or pinned in a playful wrestling game, I panic. I've caused many injuries trying to get out of a hold. And doing things like spelunking? Oh, God, just seeing it on TV sends me into convulsions of fear.

In the movie "The Cave" there was a scene where they had to squeeze through this tiny spot to get to an open area, and I was like, "Oh, f*ck that...." Being in a tight place AND underwater???? No thanks, I'd sooner dive into a tank full of snakes. Snakes don't bother me.

i've done some cave diving here in florida BR, we have so many underwater springs or 'boils'. i've been to 120' down in a pitch black cave, and my insides were trembling! many divers die in caves down here every year.

I get really dizzy and have passed out when I am in a tall building looking out of the window or near the edge of a cliff. Can't do it ......never will. I've passed out in moo crowds too. I had a hard time at the fiery food festival this week end. I had to get a soda for my neck and sit down in the courtyard. I don't like the color yellow in a room but it doesn't give me the willies anymore. So that's about all for me.

the color yellow would freak you out? never heard of that.

i hate ladders too. not heights, but ladders. i'll go as hight up as you want, part of the routine is to check the roof of 801 Grand: 43 floors up. flat roof, then straight down. i can handle that. so long as there is something under my feet at least 3 feet by 3 feet, and i can't see straight down... i'm fine.

About seven years ago, I fell 40 feet into a river... on a horse. Me, and the horse together. He walked backwards off the side of a country road. We parted in mid air.. which probably saved my life. I landed on a rock, on the side of my head.

Kind of accounts for some of my posts here... eh?

So I am deathy afraid of heights. Not wild about horses.

Have always been frightened to death of water.

Weeder........

I did not have that kind of experience......how scary......

I was on a 17.5 hand horse when I was 8 years old. He threw me up against a building on HIS way back to the barn. He wanted me off his back on the way to the barn.......period.....the end.

You motivated me to go on. My face was half under water. I thought I was a goner. I thought of my two sons. I felt sad, but calm. Then I saw the horse above me pawing at wet rock to try to escape the river, His backside would have landed on my skull if he slipped. I began crawling to put distance between he and I. There were water mocassins in the river. I was in shock. I tried to climb through tall thick grass to get back up to the road. But there was a cement wall there. Finally I used the steel bolts in the cement as a ladder to get up to the road. My right ear was almost severed. I also had a hematoma the size of a football on my lower back. I think I was kicked at some point but dont remember it. I know your not going to believe this. Two patients at a nearby rehabilitation center were driving down the deserted road. Two men who were learning new skills as a result of head injurys they received at work. They took me to the hospital. Two very good samaritans.

During a wargame I was wearing full chem gear curled up under a desk because of a similated "bombing". The mask wasn't on right, so instead of breathing nice filtered air, I was breathing my own exhaled breath, over and over. I started panicking and finally couldn't take it anymore and burst out from under there and ripped my mask off to glorious air! Ever since, I've been wary of close spaces. Years later, I nearly had a panic attack in an elevator that stopped.

I'm better now. I can concentrate on breathing and speak logic to myself to calm down. Made it through an MRI last year without major incident. :yh_party

Moths and to a lesser extent butterflies.

I really can’t stand moths above a couple of mm. wingspan. The big fat beige horrors with the eyes that reflect orange in the light are the worst.

It must be funny to see me, a big guy in his 60’s with a CV that probably warrants an ‘adults only’ certificate, turn into a gibbering heap in the presence of a big moth in the same room as myself.

I don't think a moth with a 2mm wingspan has been invented yet. :-3

....and for our imperial friends, that's a tad over 1/16" :D
