Today, I saw a TV program on the "Sun Sports" channel on Sport Fishing.

There were two anglers on this boat fishing for Tarpin. One of the anglers finally hooked a Tarpon, & battled with it on his wire fishing line for about 20 minutes. Eventually the fish tired, & the angler brought the fish in close to the boat for the TV camera to view it. They said it was close to 100 pounds, & it sure looked it.

Since they were Sport Fishermen, they catch the fish only to let the go, after they pull the fish up to the boat to admire it. When letting it go (here's the part that got me) to my suprise, the second angler just reached close to the fish on the first anglers line, and cut the wire fish line about 6 inches form the fish's mouth "leaving" the hook still in the mouth! :yh_think

MY QUESTION : IS THAT THE NORMAL THING FOR SPORT FISHERMEN/WOMEN TO DO, LEAVE THE HOOK IN THE FISH'S MOUTH? I would think that hinders the fish's future eating?:-2

as a seasoned sports fisher WOMAN from the keys, no, he should have taken the hook out of the tarpon's mouth. it can be done carefully, with pliers.that will get infected, abcessed and inhibit the fish from eating.

HI LC, that's exactaly what I thought, (I've done some fishing, but not sport) that's why the question. I'm very suprised that's what they showed on the program, supposed to be of "seasoned" anglers!

(Novices seeing that program, will be doing the same thing now.)

it's stupid to fish for tarpon anyway, they are inedible and are practically tame, being hand-fed at many waterside restaurants by the tourists. they should have gone after a REAL sport fish, the buncha wussies.

I've seen that done, too, and always wondered about it.



I used to fish with a friend who worked in a hatchery (not AT the

hatchery, all you smart alecks out there!! :p ) and if we weren't

going to eat what we caught, we used barb-less hooks and always

took them out. He told me that barbs could tear up their mouths

enough that they wouldn't feed and they'd die anyway. Imagine what

having the whole hook in there would do!!



One time we went fishing and my friend said I wouldn't get anything

and I bet him I would... so he said "Well I'll cook whatever you catch"

Guess who sat down to a really tasty fish fry that night?



Somewhere around here I have a pic of me standing on this big rock

wearing nothing but a red cowboy shirt and holding up a string of

trout... ah, those were the days!!

Doesn't look like they will be throwing that one back in! Barracuda, is that a tasty fish? I'm a Flounder, Cod, & Shrimp guy only. Don't like any other kind of Seafood.

When I was in the key's we were out by the Tortugas and a barracuda swam right in front of my face, that was a gas !!! Ill try to dig out some underwater pics.

when you dive or snorkel anywhere in keys or caribbean waters the 'cudas will follow you around like puppydogs. it's advisable to never wear any jewelry in the water, they are attracted to shiny things. i've never heard of a diver attacked by one, but when they are landed in a boat they will bite anything they can reach, my uncle nearly lost his genitals like that!!

Your right. I worked with a guy, its all he fished for, he was quite the expert. Even had a big article in the Sunday paper on him. He would dock fish at night and they were very hard to catch apparently. He would bring some in occasionally and fry it up. I would liken it to Orange Roughy, sort of on the sweet side. (If sweet is the right word)

Also he said they fight like hell once you hook them.

Yup thats Dave. He was a funny guy but a lying prick. His girlfriend worked with us. She was 17 and a few of us got to drinking one night, we worked in a cinema pub and after we closed we would hit the kegs. Anyway she went home drunk and he told her parents I got her drunk and her parents called my job !

Yes thats a good book and it was a good film w/ Spencer Tracy. Kinda bare bones but good. Off the topic what was that film where the ship sank (not Titanic) and the whole film took place in the life boat. 1 guy had gangrene and they had to amputate his leg ????

Isn't called "LIFE BOAT" I think it was made in 1944 Hitchcock move if I'm correct, I could be wrong ....:-3

Well LC, you were right, last night at the restaurant I ordered Blackened Mahi-Mahi. It was quite "tasty"! Guess I can add another "fish" to my "like" list! Thanks!;)

i'm glad you felt adventurous Cars! how about this...have you ever had fresh tuna? the yellowfin is fabulous, usually served as a fish sandwich. get it with some cole slaw and fries, YUM!

Cars the snook you probably wont find in a restaurant. Its protected I believe but if you ever get the chance, put your mouth around one, then chew and swallow.

Yes LC, I've tried Yellow Fin & Blue Fin Tuna, caught fresh from the docks. Really didn't care for it, so it's not on my "Like" list!:wah: But thanks anyway.

Nomad, since it's "protected" chances are slim I will ever get to try it. :wah: But if I do get the chance to have snook, before putting it in my mouth, chewing & swallowing, I would really like to have it cooked first!:D :p

has anyone here ever eaten shark? i mean knowingly. i won't touch it, but it's in the fish markets. i have a deal with them, i won't eat them if they don't eat me.

Yes LC, I tasted Shark as well as Swordfish, tasted similar to me, & I did not like either, so they are not on my "Like" list!:wah:

I have had shark and swordfish kabobs on the grill. I remember it being ok. Gator tail isnt half bad either.
