Monday's Boycott

Read an article in the local paper, a company near us did a poll a few

weeks ago (they said they did appreciate their employees honesty) and

found out that FOUR HUNDRED of their workers would leave this coming

Monday to support the boycott. Unbelievable. They didn't make clear

whether or not they were going to shut down operations, but I'd be

dockin' some pay at the very least.

This is the company:

DH and I are going to do our weekly grocery shopping on Monday. Don't

know what good it will do, but I guess it's something.

Sorry, with people from all over the world on here I should make it

more clear.

The boycott is an attempt to show the importance of workers in this

country (specifically California, in a lot of cases) and the need to

resolve the whole illegal immigrant question.

They are trying with economic pressures to move somebody to do

something. It's going to cost businesses and schools a lot of money.

I did finally hear on the news last night that our county supe of

schools will give students an unexcused absence if they leave

class to participate in the boycott.

It's the AMERICAN way isn't it? I believe it was the Irish immigrants who first did something like this in America

I believe you may be right, Maxi, but the difference here is these people

for the most part didn't come here LEGALLY.

Most accounts of immigration that I have read, the people saved and

saved, and bought a ticket in steerage and came through Ellis Island.

Legally.

It may sound like a sticking point with me, but nevertheless, that's

what I feel currently.

I think the business that employ them should be boycotted, and all the people who hire day laborers and domestics ( illegal)should be heavily fined and prosecuted.

I wanted to know about this.. I heard about it at work yesterday. Supposedly all Latinos have decided not to work on Mondays... I heard not just Monday...... Mondays. This action would literally cripple businesses here. I dont want to say much about something I dont know the facts about but.... I think its great. So many people hire these "immigrants" They call them immigrants... and dont be fooled. They do not only hire them because they are hard and reliable workers( which they are) They hire them because they accept way less pay than anyone else. Then they are referred to in a disrespectful way. I always wondered how long these people would keep silent. It will be an eye opener for many cocky, employers.

It would also be an eye opener to just how important they and their services are.

Weeder there was a gardening business here that used day laborers exclusively, this business was trimming palm trees one day and one of the workers (a Latino) fell out of the tree, he was left for dead, not only that, the owner of the business made one of the day laborers go and get the injured mans belt and tools, and then he took off, a neighbor jumped in his car and got the license number of the truck, the man that fell died a few hours later. he was treated less then a human, why?

There was a comedy /movie (independent) out last year and all the Mexicans were abducted and it showed the functionality (or lack of) everyday living here in the US.

The company that I work for is concerned about this "Monday Strike" as well. A good percentage of our employees are Hispanic. Many of them are great employees and have been with the company for a long time.

I work in the Human Resource Department. All new-hires here are paid the same entry wage and are entitled to a raise according to job performance. Many employees in the plant make more than I do but, that is fine with me. I myself worked a few years in the plant so I understand how hard that job can be. We do have bilingual employees who work in Human Resource, and I have learned a few Spanish words and phrases to help communicate with our Hispanic employees. My job is to serve all our employees, Hispanic, Black, White, or Purple.

Part of my job involves in-processing of new-hires. That means I am the one who reviews documentation. I must see, according to The Department of Homeland Security, documents that establish identity and establish eligibilty to work. Recently, our department took a class on the proper way to do this and we were given tools to do this. Since I have taken this class, I have been somewhat disheartened to see how many Hispanics do not, in fact, have proper identification. And no, we do not in-process these folks because of this.

From a personal stand-point, these folks are probably nice people people and hard, steady workers and would be a great asset to our company. But, they want to live and work in our country. To do this they need to comply with our laws, pay taxes, and learn our language. They would not need to lose their Hispanic heritage to do this. This is just my opinion.

I recieved this via email this morning. It relates to the boycott tomorrow.

The First of May is Shopping Day!

Illegal immigrants are planning a nationwide boycott of all goods and services on Monday, May 1st. They have marched in our streets and demanded rights as a reward for breaking our country's law. They hope to show that they have an impact on our economy, they hope to hurt American business, they hope to emotionally and economically blackmail us into submission.

So what can we do? All Americans who support LEGAL immigration but demand that all immigrants RESPECT our law are asked to act on May 1st. Wear RED or BLUE that day (They will be wearing white), and go SHOPPING.

If you have to grocery shop, make it May 1st. Need gas in your car? Fill it up May 1st. Buy Mother's Day gifts, buy summer clothes, buy whatever you need, but BUY THAT DAY.

American citizens outnumber illegal immigrants, and we MUST make ourselves heard. Wear red or blue to show your pride in your country, and your opposition to weak border and amnesty legislation. And GO SHOPPING! Let's make May 1st a day to remember, and remind Congress that the illegal immigrants they cower before can't vote. We can. And we will.

The First of May is Shopping Day!

Heres an overall view of my feelings... I am angry that as a single mom.. I couldnt afford to pay for my boys to go to school. We lived for 15 years without medical coverage. I was too proud to become a medicaid recipient, or a welfare statistic. I chose instead to work 2 jobs...and be robbed of being a proper mother to my children. Illegal latinos come here and receive Medical assistance... college scholarships, and reduced housing. I think they are wonderful, hard working people. My problem is not with them.. but with the convoluted policys of our government. WE DO NOT TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN!!!!!!!!! never have. Now, I have had many many illegai Irish friends in my life. who had to live in fear about being deported by immigration when they went home for a visit. I dont get it. But yes, this should be quite an eye opener for many greedy disrespectful, money ghoul business owners here.

So true, and the funny thing if they were not important, why were they hired? I think people who hire them should pay the price. So why is big Business worried? I feel they (Immigrants)are being made scapegoats for something that is far more sinister with our government and "Big Money "

How about bringing jobs back to America ?
