Galveston at night has to be one of the worse places on the planet. The mosquitoes are so big you can read the serial numbers on their wings. The ones in Africa were small, but hurt and left a whelp. I am in combat mode considering the diseases on the rise. West Nile etc. I don’t want a repellant. I want to see them die in flight and be dead before they hit the ground. Only the females bite and buzz by your ear.
How about your bugs?

I'm pretty lucky. since I live at 5500 feet, over a mile high, and in a semi-arid environment, we have very, very few bugs that can survive those conditions.
There are a few pillbugs or "rollie-pollies" under the logs. Ants, of course, which live everywhere. (We have a particularly nasty variety called "fireants") we do have a plethora of spiders, but most are harmless. ( except for the Black Widow and the Brown Recluse which can be lethal)
But we have very few cockroaches (I've only seen one in ten years), almost no grasshoppers, very few mosquitos (there's just no stagnant water anywhere!) and absolutely no dragonflies.
We also have very few houseflies, I think the altitude affects them.

I do not ever want to live with bugs again. In New York **** roaches are simply a way of life. Whole buildings are infested. The best you can do is keep them at bay. You can never totally rid yourself of them. They ride home with you in grocery bags and multiply at the speed of light.
Now Georgia.. That was a horse of a different color. Southeast Coast of Georgia. Humid and hot. They call them no see ums. Small mosquitoes that literally eat you alive. Fire ants in the ground. I still have scars on my hands from the bites. Chiggers... go up your pants.. bury themselves under your skin. Itch like the devil. Huge **** roaches and these crawly things with pincers that look like little human beings crawling across the room. Dont even get me started on the coastal rats. They are EVERYWHERE. Worst experience I had was them scratching at the wire mesh on the heating vents. Trying to get into the shop at night when I was working late. Never, ever again. Oh Yeah.. I forgot the spiders. Some of the biggest spiders I have ever seen in my life. And Brown Recluse and Black Widows love it there. All and all it was a horrific experience.
