Big family discussion over having the most recent newborn grandson circumcised or not. The mother asked for the the reasons for and against, as she was to be the final deciding factor. Here were the comments.

Well, he should look like his father because his father is circumcised.

(Why? his organ may grow to be larger or smaller than his father's, therefore not looking the same)

It would be more sanitary if he was circumcised.

(Only if he pracitices poor hygiene)

He would be prone to penile cancer.

(Myth, just not true)

A circumcised penis looks better.

(than what?)

His sexual pleasure would be enhanced due to the sensitivity of the glans if uncircumcised.

(true)

He would not be in the minority in the locker room if circumcised.

(depends on what country's locker room)

It' a totally un necessary procedure that causes trauma in the newborn.

(hmm)

Western countries do not circumcise females why should we circumcise males?

(good point)

It was finally decided to not have the youngster circumcised primarily due to the possibility of depriving him of some sexual pleasure, plus he could decide to have it done as an adult if he felt it was that important.

(It's hardly major surgery)

You know Lon, one of my sons is, and one of them isn't. The oldest was born in the 70s when it was done no matter what. But my youngest in the mid 80s, when you could opt not to have it done. I do think it is a decision for them when they are older. I got alot of heat at the time for making that decision for my youngest.

koochikoo wrote: Being unfamiliar with the actual procedure of circumcision, I just googled it out of curiosity. It seems a rather barbaric and unneccesary practice, not to mention painful for a poor little baby with no choice in the matter. We aren't allowed to smack our children but we are allowed to cut pieces off their bodies, without anesthetic in most cases, and this is quite ok. How brutal. It should be left until the child is old enough to choose for themselves, and also old enough in the very least to be administered anaethetic! This link has quite graphic pictures and details of the operation. Please don't look if you are squeamish, it made me cringe!

I chose to leave my son the way he was born, didn't make sense to me to start chopping anything off of him! It's his body he can decide what he wants to do with it! :)

Well said Clancy I see it as barbaric as well. The time has come to give the baby boys a chance to decide later in life if they want it done when they can be knocked out for heaven sake. Who the hell said it had to be done soon after birth??? They say newborns don't feel pain as we do, somehow I don't care that they may not feel pain as intense as adults still flippin pain..:-5

In my case the answer is obvious.

What IS interesting is that circumcised males are now scientifically proven to be far less likely to become infected if exposed to HIV during intercourse.

It seems it is due to the nature of the skin surface of the inside section of the foreskin that is excised.

I had my son circumcised, there were no second thoughts on having it done. But it was hell the first year keeping his little tallywhacker clean and the skin pushed back so it healed correctly. But I was also wanting to add, that circumcision as an adult is even more painful, or that's what I've been told.

In the Jewish religion, all men are circumcized at a ceremony called a briss.

I do not come from a religious family, but circumcision was still the expected thing to do.

When my twin sister's son was born, the briss was performed eight days after he was born. I was the unlucky one who had to hold my nephew down while the circumcision was performed. The moyle (the person who performs the briss) first put a little drop of Kosher wine on his tongue.

But I still remember having to restrain my little nephew while he wailed and wailed. It was very difficult for me (not to mention him!). It breaks my heart thinking of that day.

However, if I had male children, I would have them circumcized. I may choose to have it done in the hospital instead, but it is something I would choose to do.

This question brings to mind a letter I read in Dear Abby the other day. A woman wrote concerned that her grandson may be gay, and wondered if having a circumscision would "cure" him.

Abby responded that no it did not. She went on to say that the jewish people perform circumcision as a religeous ritual, and if it "cured" homosexuality, there would be no gay jews. She went on to name several promanent Jews who were gay, Harvey Firestien (actor), Politician Barney Frank and others.

Lon, that's a good question.

I guess it's because I have been socialized to think that this is the right thing to do. I'm not defending my choice, just explaining how I got there. All the men in my family have been circumcized (even those in mixed marriages), so I guess I'm just more comfortable with it.

You may say that this is not really fair to my offspring (if I had any).

And you would be 100% right.

Any sexual experience I have (not a lot, but not a little either;)) always involved a circumcized 'member', whether my partner was Jewish or not. It's just what I'm used to.

Why is circumcision associated with Jewish people so much?

Isnt circumcision practiced by a large number of people that are non-Jewish as well?

K. I think it is so associated with Jewish people is that I think they are the only people that do it as a religeous ceremony, and ALL the babies are circumcised. Most European cultures do it as an optional procedure, in the hospital, not long after birth.

Someone is free to correct me if I am wrong here.

It's what God told Abraham, in the Bible:

This is my covenant with you and your descendants after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised. You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you. For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner”those who are not your offspring. Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised.

All Jews consider themselves to be descended from Abraham and bound by this contract. God goes on to say "Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant."

Actually, all Jews consider all Arabs to be descended from Abraham too, but that's different.
