Happy Fathers Day, Uncle K !!!! (It's not actually Fathers Day in Oz until I think October.. ). My son tends to forget my birthday etc too, and then suddenly will come up with a gift which bowls me totally over. Frinstance, a few years ago I asked him to explain to me techno music - zilch for my birthday that year, but about six months later I received a three CD gift, a history of techno music, carefully selected by him with a detailed, deeply researched commentary. How special can a mother feel!!!! Incidentally, he also shot my street cred through the roof by tutoring me in the finer points of gangsta rap!

He's gone back with his Norwegian girlfriend. He'll be working in a recycling plant during the day (paper I think), and he is making some extra money by painting the local town hall. (decorating, not art)

Years ago I spent Midsummer Eve staying at Oslo University. Not far enough north to have 24 hours of daylight but it certainly was light most of the night. People danced in the streets ALL NIGHT. Think there was about an hour of half light. Weird. Had something similar in Alaska.

It was dark all day last time he went. He is staying an 18hour train journey north of Oslo, but at the moment he is a 7hour drive further north than that. Apart from being on a plane, it's the furthest north he's been

WOW!! I'm only just back from London and had forgotten how far north England is. It was light a bit after 4am!!!! And of course till after 9pm. Here in Australia of course we're in winter and the days are lots shorter. (And colder - grin)
