For those of us with the holiday here...any special plans?
We probably will hang out home this weekend. I have a four day weekend, but Rick is working on Monday. We did buy some special treats when shopping yesterday...shrimp and some really good crab dip. We have decide we may go out and get a few dozen clams and steam them on Tuesday.
We stay home for fireworks..as Rick and I both like the Boston Pops Forth of July concert.

We'll take my Dad out for dinner on Sunday night (it's a longggggggg weekend for him to be home alone)
And a cookout on Tuesday.

I have been off all of last week... Except for Wednesday.. we had a special project that I needed to be there for.. I didn't really want to take all that time off, but I had Compensataion Credit that I had to use up before the new fiscal year or I would have lost them...
I have to work Monday.. but I have the holiday off. We will watch the parade, and our town has a HUGE fire-works display that we will watch at about 10 pm on the fourth.
Then, it's back to work.. I am kind of looking forward to it. All this time off is not very good for my liver.

Im afraid the 4th of July isnt what it used to be. Atleast its not for me. Too many damn laws restricting the use of powerful fireworks. We have drunken idiots to thank for that, but im most positive some are just plain dumb and irresponsible. I would like to get my hands on some of 20 M-80s but they are illegal here in Ohio, like alot of other fireworks -- come to think of it, almost everything categorized as fireworks are illegal here. Just isnt the same. And the 4th of July was my favorite holiday(aside from Christmas of course). Now to me its rather dull, as what to expect is nothing more than a Roman candle and some firecrackers.
Sucks to the extreme.

When I was a child, 4th of July meant a picnic in the backyard of cold watermelon after grilled hot dogs and hamburgers with homemade potato salad and beans. We sometimes had a pool in the yard where we could wade and splash and keep cool. After dark, the sky above our neighborhood in Chicago came alive with brightly colored explosions and we would laugh and cover our ears when a loud boom occured. The backyard then would be alight with occasional sparklers and lightening-bugs. There would be alot of "ooooos" amd "ahhhhhhhs" and "happy birthday usa's" among us.
Today, 4th of July means a paid holiday off from work. And...
I am still proud to be American even after becoming aware through the years of our flaws. Men and women are still dying for what they believe in and I consider the deadly fireworks that have exploded over the years and are still happening today......in war. Americans do have freedoms, which we cherish, but with freedom come responsibilities and, sometimes, sacrifices. We should be proud...but we also should be humbled.
