But if you look at the fine print at the bottom, it says "The Landover Baptist website is not to be viewed by anyone under the age of 18"

I am hoping it is a joke...but then, the Southern Baptists are prety extreme.

Whether or not this site is a spoof...the sad thing is, there are extreme Christians who do believe this way. They see evil in everything that is not church related. I even remember hearing when I was young that "good' girls do not wear tampons. Could never get a reason why.

Landover Baptist Church

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

The Landover Baptist Church is a web site that serves as the home of a fictional Baptist church based in the fictional town of Freehold, Iowa. The Landover Baptist site and its associated Landoverbaptist.NET forum is a parody of fundamentalist Christianity and the religious right in the United States of America.

The site proclaims, for example, that the King James Bible as written is the literal word of God. It also has beliefs unique to its church; for example, that holding different religious beliefs from those endorsed by Landover Baptist is grounds for being damned to Hell (a parody of Westboro Baptist Church, the congregation of noted anti-gay activist Fred Phelps, who believes that opposing his church and its members is grounds for damnation); that sissy boys should wear signs that say "I'm a Sissy Boy Who Plays With Dolls"; that men who wear thin, colored underwear are either European or homosexual, "and in America there is no difference between the two"; that the spherical Earth model was a hoax perpetrated by "someone in a communist rocket ship"; and that George W. Bush was appointed directly by God to the office of President of the United States of America to do battle with heathens and other un-American individuals. The site also says that it upholds very racist views. It says that it believes that Native Americans were the first terrorists in American history, and that African Americans (on Landover Baptist called "Coloreds" or "Negroes") should still be slaves and be segregated from whites. It also says that it holds strong anti-Catholic and anti-Muslim beliefs.

The website also has its own giftshop for the purchase of "Christian" products (such as thongs and bumper stickers promoting the church, even gifts for the "unwelcome heathens"), as well as a section that features hate mail from people who have been offended by the material on the site. While some letters are from individuals who do not realize that the site is a parody, others are from people who are offended by the site's portrayal of fundamentalist Christianity.

The Landover site was created by Chris Harper (head writer and Chief Editor, aka "Pastor Deacon Fred"). Mr. Harper has used his "Pastor Deacon Fred" persona when giving public speeches for organizations such as American Atheists and Houston Atheist Society. No part of the site was meant to be taken seriously. There is even a link at the bottom of every page that brings you to the Terms of Service. It states "Landover Baptist Church is a complete work of fiction. It is a satire/parody."

The first book from Landover Baptist writers will be released on September 12, 2006 from Time Warner Books. It is called Welcome to Jesusland (Formerly the United States of America): Shocking Tales of Depravity, Sex, and Sin Uncovered by God's Favorite Church, Landover Baptist.

English wasn't his native language either.

You have to love the irony of fundamentalist bible thumpers quoting from a bible written at the behest of a gay jock from edinburgh! Just don't mention it to them as they have no sense of humour.

The "gentleman" tried to get into Canada to protest at our seupreme court. When the hotel found out who was coming they cancelled all their reservations and told them to stay home.

We do not need that kind of crap in Canada.

Now "God hates Canada". Though I think it is Phelps and his ilk that hate Canada and it has nothing to do with God.

Yes, well, we all heard strange things back in the day; masturbation will make you go blind, or babies come from the cabbage patch . That was as much a condition of the culture as anything else. Remember, Lucy and Ricky Ricardo weren't allowed to share the same bed on TV but it would be silly to claim that some extremist in Hollywood really believe this way. It is a spoof. Not reality. And there are extremists who see evil in anything religious, too. They are no better than those they condemn.

Ted, unfortunately the Westboro Baptist Church does exist but they have been excoriated by every religious and conservative organization and group I know of. Even Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, the Southern Baptist Association, Young Conservative Activists, Pat Robertson, and Jay Sekulo of the ACLJ are just some that I have personally heard condemn the Rev. Fred Phelps. That church only represents the membership of its church, no one else.

What's very troublesome to me is the rapid rise of fundamentalism within the Christian church. I grew up in a family of Catholics, Methodists and Advent Christians (heard of them, 'Zapple?) They'd have turned away in disgust from the kinds of hatred and bigotry we see publicly expressed by ever-increasing numbers of those who speak loudly and sactimoniously in the name of "Gentle Jesus, meek and mild."

Yours truly and other "fundies", as you like to refer to us when you are not calling us the Taliban, have turned away in disgust at the despicable antics of the likes of Fred Phelps. That people like Phelps exist is a given. As Ted pointed out, it is easy to let one putrid apple taint the whole barrel. However, they are representative of a very, very small minority just as the Unibomber and the Earth Liberation Front are representative of a very, very small number of environmentalists. Phelps and his church have made themselves pariahs among other churches. I may often agree with some of your points but you extend your bigotry to a very large segment of the Christian population; something you don't tolerate when such bigotry is applied to homosexuals. Btw, there is no sudden, rapid rise in fundamentalism in the Christian church. While fundamentalists have become more politically savvy, we are far more progressive than the fundamentalists of old. That we disagree with you on social issues doesn't make us "dangerous".

Actually Jesus was anything but meek and mild by the modern definitions. He was a social and spiritual revolutionary who was ultimately crucified out of fear that he would cause or lead a revolt against Rome. He was a s**t disturber to put it bluntly. He opposed all of the existing systems that were in place and kept the masses poor and disadvantaged.

He was also the one who said that the greatest commandment was love of God and fellow man and that on these two all of the rest of the commandments were dependent.

He displayed righteous anger at times as in calling the Pharisees hypocrites or in throwing the tables in the temple over.

Ted, I put that in quotes because it's the description I was raised with. I rather liked that Jesus...he "loved me." As an adult, I learned of the more radical Jesus but I can't find him at all in the actions of those who assault health care clinics, demonstrate at military funerals and attempt to deny some basic civil rights to people with same-sex orientation.

'Zapple, you & I've been 'round this issue before. NEVER, EVER did I associate you and yours with the outer fringe loonies like Phred Phelps! BUT--surely you'll admit there's a rapid rise in fundamental activity?

Not that this is essentially "evil" or even "dangerous," in itself. What does scare the whoopee out of me is seeing these people attempting to insert their religion into my government, my body and my daily life.

I'll remind you again of the group of (secret) fundies who got themselves onto the school board in a little town south of here and proceeded to make some BIG changes in the curriculum--changes which essentially put their religious beliefs into classrooms. A hidden agenda isn't very JESUSY, is it? No, it's not...it smacks more of the TALIBAN!

Let's imagine for a minute that the fundamentalists actually succeeded in getting themselves into a position of power in this country. What changes do YOU think they'd make? What do you think they'd want to write into our constitution? What do you think would happen to "alternative" religions? Would it be possible for a pagan or a practitioner of witchcraft to succeed in public life? (I realize that's not even possible today....bad example.)

You see my point. Based on everything I know about you....you're not "scary." But I'm not at ALL sure about some of your fellows.

I concur completly with your first paragraph. It is right on including how I was raised.

I also concur with the fact that fundamentalism is on the rise, especially in the southern hemisphere. Without looking for it, I recently read in a few books where todays theologians are indeed concerned about this rise and see in it the dangers that you suggest.

There are extremists in every faith and it is the extremists we must worry about not the average person.

I was raised in a very fundamentalist church and left it for many reasons one of which is that I found it very unchristian in its word and action. In fact some things were outright dispicable.

Shalom to you, too, Ted! I was raised on the bible and the gentle faith of my grandmother--the most Christian woman I've ever known. It's hurtful and terrifying to see what's emerging from the roots of that faith.

In the same way that the (somewhat) peaceful core of Islam is being perverted, so, too, are the principles of Jesus. "Judge not, lest ye be judged." "Love one another as I have loved you." And I can't remember the verbage...but when he castigated the Pharisees for their GRAND DISPLAYS OF PUBLIC PIETY....:)

But, when the righteous believe to their bones that they've got GOD on their side and theirs is the ONLY way...we're all in trouble.

AussiePam, it's interesting--the evangelicals have the Catholic church on the defensive in Costa Rica, Guatemala and parts of Mexico (and perhaps all over Central America.)

The people I spoke with there told me it's largely due to two factors...the first being the Catholic church's taking their membership for granted and the second being the evangelicals' stance against alcohol, which is a major problem in that part of the world. People told me that the women of the small villages have alligned themselves with evangelicals to keep alcohol away from their men.

Literally everywhere I went in Guatemala, I saw a new evangelical church.

(You might also be interested in this....in Chichicastenengo, we saw shaman rituals going on IN the Catholic church, DURING the mass....WITH the cooperation of the priest! It would appear they're trying to appease the congregants.)
