What is it about referring to a pregnant woman's Bump??

I am not sure how it is in other countries, but I am noticing a big trend in the American media about referring to a pregnant woman's belly as her "baby bump" or just "bump". More often it is when referring to celebrity moms-to-be.
Whats the deal, and more importantly, where did this come from? It seems to have popped up out of no where.

I think it's cute, what else would you call it? pregnancy protrusion, perhaps??

I dont care what you guys call mine when Im pregnant. I will just be elated when I FINALLY AM pregnant!!:D

Perhaps it's their polite way of saying they can't believe someone would actually volunteer to spread their seed with these women :wah:
