yep

http://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/Sc ... fUnion.htm

n a poorly attended Scottish Parliament the MP's voted to agree the Union and on 16th January 1707 the Act of Union was signed. The Scottish parliament was dissolved and England and Scotland became one country.

Scotland kept its independence with respect to it's legal and religious systems, but coinage, taxation, sovereignty, trade , parliament and flag became one. The red cross of St. George combined with the blue cross of St. Andrew resulting in the 'old' union flag. This is popularly called the Union Jack, although strictly speaking, this only applies when it is flown on the jackstaff of a warship.

The Union flag that we recognise today did not appear until 1801, after another Act of Union, when the 'old' flag combined with the red cross of St. Patrick of Ireland.

strictly speaking not Great Britain, if you feel like being pedantic about it. GB after 1801. George the third was german just to confuse things even more.

gmc wrote: strictly speaking not Great Britain, if you feel like being pedantic about it. GB after 1801.I think not, to be honest. "The United Kingdom of Great Britain" from scotland's entry to the Union until Ireland's, and "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland" for the following century. Great Britain is the name of the big island, Ireland is the name of the smaller one, that's all.

The site ought to have given the right answers with the mark. To be, I hope, sufficiently obscure as not to spoil the thing, if you label the multiple-choice answers ijkl then the right ones are kkikkikkkl

There is no limit to the number of times a Senator can be re-elected.

New Presidents are inaugurated in January. Whose bright idea this was, I've no clue - DC in January is COLD.

Washington was the first CIC of the US military.

The introduction to the Constitution is the Preamble: "We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution of the United States of America."

The Constitution was written in 1787.

Congress has the power to declare war.

Thomas Jefferson wrote most of the Declaration of Independence.

Germany, Italy, and Japan were the three main enemies of the US in WWII.

Of the four choices listed, Vermont was not one of the original 13 states.

The US fought England (apparently that should be Great Britain, according to some Brits here; I always thought the two terms were interchangeable, as do most Americans - I learned something new ;) ) during the Revolution.
