As the holidays will be here before we know it, thought I would start a thread where we can share some of our favorite holiday recipes. Another idea..if you want, share a plesant memorie you may have surrounding this recipe.
I will add one when I get home. I have a couple of favorites.

Whenever we all get together at my granmomma's house, which seem to be only on holidays anymore, we always beg her to make greens. No body can make them like her, she doesn't use a recepie, so I watched her and wrote down exactly what she did ;
3 bunches fresh mustard greens
3 bunches fresh turnip greens
1/4 cup butter
1/2 cup dill pickle juice
5 slices bacon
1/3 cup sliced onion
salt and pepper to taste
Wash the greens, of course. Put them in a big pot with about eight cups of water. Add everthing else and bring to a boil. Boil for 20 min, simmer for 30.
Simple right, I can't get them to taste anything like hers. She's magic!

Pinky wrote: Banana Chicken:
Par-fry chicken breasts until nearly done,
Add carton of double cream
2 - 4 cut -up bananas - fry until mushy
Stir in white wine (how much is up to you, until it's the consitancy you want)
Add Spinkling of rosemary & saffron if it's available
Black pepper
Transfer to casserole dish for half an hour
Serve with roast potaoes cooked in goose fat (they taste like christmas!)
And green veg.
No-one has disliked it yet!
(Also called exotic wishes dish -you have to wish on the first mouthful!)
That sounds so delightfully different! Also fattening, but it's holiday fare. Oh, rosemary and saffron!
First cool weekend, I'm making that!
Thanks Pinks!:-6
Oh, I have to ask, (from the South and all) do you batter the chicken at all or dredge them in flour or just straight pan fry?

My favorite holiday memory is the one when grandma passed out with her face in the sweet potatos.

OK, I am cheating by reposting one I posted here a while back. But it was a staple on my mom's holiday table. Her table was not complete without it. The great thing is that it is a simple recipe that the kids can almost prepare on thier own.
PRINCESS PUDDING
2 boxes strawberry flavored JELL-O brand geletin
1 reg sized package Cool Whip topping
1 package frozen strawberries (can substitute fresh in season) thawed
1 angel food cake..broken into bits.
First, prepare ONE package of JELL-O per package directions. Pour liquid into a retangular pan, or cake pan and chill till set. Then cut into aprox. 1 inch square cubes.
When JELLO is ready, mix all other ingredients together into a mixing bowl.
When this part is done, prepare the *second* package of JELL-O per package directions..but DO NOT SET.
Pour the liquid directly into the mixture of other ingredients. and combine.
When this is done, fold the mixture into a rectangular cake pan and let set for several hours.

Oh my. I suddenly remember my 80 something year old uncle getting mad after losing a hand of cards. Stood up, threw his cards across the table and started swearing in Italian.

Another Sweet Potato memory. We were at my brother's...forget if it was Christmas or Thanksgiving. My sister in law was bring the sweet taters out to the table. As she was moving around a chair to get to the other side of the table she tripped over the table leg and the taters ended up all over the nice white curtains!! People still laugh about it.

Some of these look way too familiar. My Grandaddy ate brains and eggs all the time ( GROSS) and we had chocolate gravy and biscuits every Sunday morning whenI visited. Ah, the memories.
Lime jello, pineappleand cottage cheese is good! Head cheese and chitlins, also a very normal thing. My great grandmother ate pig genitials on a regular basis, said it was for luck or something. Superstitious old folks??
But the chocolate gravy, you gotta try it, especially if you have kids or grandkids. It's wonderful, it's just wonderful!

My first Thanksgiving with David's family I bout stressed because there was no cranberry sauce on the table, only this relish. I didn't like the looks of it, but tryed it anyways. I loved it, and will not eat craberry sauce out of a can again.
6 oranges ground up twice
6 apples ground up once
2 pkg. cranberries ground up once
4 env. unsweetened gelatin
4 cups boiling water
4 cups sugar
1 cup chopped pecans
1 bottle red food coloring
Grind fruit using the coarse blade on grinder. Dissolve gelatin in cold water, then add half the boiling water. Add the sugar to this mixture, stirring until dissolved, then add remaining boiling water. Stir in the fruit and pecans. Add food coloring.
Fix this in a large bowl, cause it makes a huge amount.
