Possibly for me it is a way of communicating with people without having to get involved in too many real life social groups which I don't always enjoy. I can, at times, be a bit shy or even a bit reclusive and this way, I can chat away if and when I want without having to concern myself with running out of things to say or even, how I look.
If I ponder more, I shall probably come up with loads of other reasons too.

I think alot like Theia. It gives me the opportunity to interact with many people, with little effort. It fills my need for socialization without the face to face, which I have sometimes found uncomfortable.
It also goes back to the days when I was younger and I had many penpals, through snail mail. Remember snail mail?? The highlight of my day was when the mailman came so I could see if I had mail. Gee, I just had a thought, back when I was young it was ok to say mailman without worrying about being PC. He delivered the mail, and was a man. What a concept.
Plus I like the idea of interacting with folks who have different lives than myself. Makes for an interesting time.

I guess for some of us who - for one reason or another - live rather wandering lives where any sense of 'belonging' is elusive, coming here and finding friends gives a feeling of stability. Rather like being able to slip into a warm, familiar pub or cafe after work and people there know your name and smile at you.
Just back from a week in the hills. Skied my butt off. When I left yesterday afternoon it was snowing fit to bust. The whole place looked like a Christmas card. Some good tree and bump skiing on freestyle terrain in the morning.
So what's been happening? I have had no news in a week. Can someone fill me in on BR please? And anything else about the regular group. I've missed you all heaps.

I particularly like this forum because the people are from far and wide across the world. To a certain extent, we represent different cultures coming together in friendship. I like that. I don't think I would have stayed long without the variety of people here and the family like atmosphere.

My joining originally was an accident. Playing around with a brand new computer, I knew nothing about.Beginning to contribute. was astounding.. it opened a whole world to me. Continuing, was because it began to feel like a family, and I did consider many of the members to be friends. My understanding of many subjects and situations was broadened. I received more support. compassion. understanding. and affection here than from real people in my life. For a long time, I wanted to contribute all of those things to others also.

Conversations with adults was the main reason for me joining a forum. I'm home all day with 2 kids, and after awhile discussing cartoons gets a little mundane. So I went looking for a place that had both serious and humorous discussions to help fill my days....and umm night owl habits.

I've always had pen-pals, military ones. I'd send Christmas cards and the guys would always write back. During Desert Storm, i had 13. It was great!
I did meet one once, he was stationed in Adak, when he got leave, he came to see me! It was quite romantic!

Initially, I was looking to communicate with others about specific topics...Buddhism, Holidays for mature singles & Gardening. When I found FG....my eyes were opened to a whole new world I didn't know existed....now it is a lifeline of communication, discovery and freindship. I dread to think what I would be doing in the evenings if I wasn't 'here'.... I found FG at just the right time.
Anyway to answer the question....Firstly I think for me it was an alternative to actually going out and socialising for real.... I'm not shy and I don't lack confidence but I can be suspicious and apprehensive with people sometimes.....a bit of a 'scaredy cat'.
Secondly it was a way to gain specific info. discuss and learn.
I never thought that I would make real freinds. :-6

As a mad scientist Im always interested in the human psyche. Mainly because it involves brains and in my business you go through an awful lot of brains let me tell you.
Im studying the lot of you. Observing, taking notes, furiously scribbling important things you wouldnt understand. And of course taking brain measurments. Next please.

I'll be long dead before you finish measuring all of my brains. Can't you just give me the results now.

Because when ya live beyond the boodocks, with no car during the day, the forum is a way of taking me out there in to the World. I Love the World, and hearing about the going-on. Plus everyone here is so 'friendly' to each othere LOL it's better then TV, which I hardly ever watch.
'Cause it makes waiting for that stupid phone call from the surgeon so much easier, because the waiting list is a year. Cause I had to quite my job, live on the charity of others...which sucks major big time.....'cause there's only one surgeon who does this kind of operation....'cause I know there's a greater chance for me to croak of infection in that hospital...as the water is unfit for anything and full of bacteria.
So yeah, I come here, read and laugh. I don't always sign in, or say much, but it certainly takes my mind off things...and I smile.
On that note "Thanks for being so funny and friendly"

That's a great thread starter, Raven.
My hubby asked me, "Is there something deficient in our relationship that makes you want to be on that forum so much?" I told him it has *nothing* to do with him at all! It's a very real connection that I have with my friends in the Garden, and I'm just as surprised as he is.
I used to belong to a chihuahua forum, which I loved for a few months, but really -- how much can you talk and talk about chihuahuas? I needed more 'meat' in my conversations, so I googled all around and checked out different forums.
The only one I post in regularly now is FG. I know in some forums, you get folks who don't reveal themselves or, if they do, you don't know if you're getting the 'real thing'.
I must say, here I feel like so many of us are so open and honest. I can see the hearts and souls of the posters here. It's a beautiful thing :-6
I loved the mix of funny and smart that was apparent in the Garden. I must say there were a couple of personalities that scared me (!) but after awhile I jumped in.
I've never left. :-4

As most of you would have guessed, some of the postings from Lady Cop and Baby Rider were tough and direct and kinda frightened me.
Go figure: Criss is one of the people I have formed a very close bond with. We appreciate each other for what we individually bring to the table.

Hi Cher - LC was kind to me when I first arrived at FG and I always think of her fondly. There are loads of different people in here - sort of like different textures. Makes life interesting.
Then of course there is also, Nomad... . and in a white coat with test tubes poking out of the pockets, surgical gloves, reeking of formaldehyde and that smile on his face... lemmmmme outttttta here!!!!
