Steve Irwin's dad released a statement about his son. One thing mentioned is that the family will probably decline the state funeral as Steve "would not have wanted the fuss."

:-1 :-1 Just makes you weep, he was well respected where ever he went everyone loved his infectious personality, and his passion to make the wild creatures of this planet noticed by all of us and treated with the respect they deserve. I WILL MISS HIS SHOWS ON ANIMAL PLANET GREATLY, MY GRANDDAUGHTER AND I WATCHED THEM EVERYDAY, SHE IS VERY UPSET ABOUT HIS DEATH AS MANY CHILDREN ARE.. :-1

"Steve and I weren't like father and son. We never were. We were good mates." It kind of loses the meaning in print but his dad was saying that he and Steve were actualy closer than father and son. That really gets you where you live, you know?

Perhaps someone in the Antipodes will say what a "state funeral" is.

Thats how me and my dad thought about each other.

I think they should respect the wishes of his family.

It is an all out funeral...all the bells and whistles. Usuall reserved for Heads of state or higher ups. US Pres. Ronald Regan had one...as did Princess Diana (I think)

Usually done for President and heads of State.. Calling it a State Funeral also means he would be on view for the public to visit, also know as "Lying in State" and a grand procession would happen prior to his lying in state.

It seems to me a little OTT for an "ordinary bloke", no matter how much of a

celebrity, if that's the case. "Princess Diana" did not receive a state funeral,

although it was a rather grand affair. Much as I disliked the woman, I stood

by as the cortege passed, and was moved.

If Diana didn't have a State Funeral, I can't imagine what kind of affair there will be in England when there is one. Her's was huge and heartwrenching.

While I can understand the family's wish to lay Steve-o to rest quietly, I can also understand the hundreds of thousands of people who invited him into their home on a daily basis wanting to have something to help them say goodbye.

Bill, thanks for the clarification on Diana's funeral. That is why I put in the "I think" disclaimer...I was not sure if it officially was classified as such, or if it was just something that the Royals do.
