I'm sorry that you are homesick. It's an awful feeling.

But it does pass - that's the good news.
You must be pretty far south if it's that hot in the afternoons. There are lots of gorgeous things to see down there. I was raised in Appling County; not sure how close you are to that. Great fishing.
When I first moved form GA to Chicago, I freaked out! LOL. I had never been so cold, had never seen snow...you are feeling the reverse of that now. I was feeling very homesick when I first moved. I missed the slow drawl, the smell of fresh grass and tobacco, crickets singing me to sleep at night, and the availability of fruit and nuts off of trees whenever I was hungry.
My mom took me around to see all the cool things in Chicago. It was an introduction to my new home, and the wonder of massive museums and buildings that blocked out sky helped give me new things to think about. Food, too - food was huge. LOL. LOTS of great food in Chicago.
When I moved from Chicago out to Portland a few years back, I used the same technique. I walked all of our bridges (the town crosses over a large river), I checked out several of the parks, I hiked the waterfalls...and I found the wonder of a new home. Portland, sadly, doesn't have great food. I still miss that. (dramatic sigh)
Perhaps if you drive around and find the beauty of your new home it will help ease the homesickness. VA is not too far to drive or hop the train to see family so hopefully you will ease the pain of separation through frequent visits.
Places I'd recommed : Jekyll Island, St Augustine, Okeefenokee Swamp, Savannah. Also, check out the local clubs (southern clubs - like the Elks, LOL) and people there will tell you about the best nature areas if you're into that.
And send me some boiled peanuts, will ya? Gawd!! How I miss boiled peanuts. Yum!!
