Australians visiting the United States - in addition to being fingerprinted and photographed - will now be thoroughly searched in case they are attempting to conceal jars of this newly prohibited product. :-5 :-5 :-5

I hardly ever eat it, Accountable. But GEESCH !!!! What an unfriendly act. And aimed only at the few homesick Aussies who live/work over your way and can't get used to slathering sweet stuff on their brekkie toast. GEESCH.

The reason given, officially, was that it contained folate, which can apparently only be added to breads and cereals in the US.

I can't stand vegemite, but I will of course defend the rights of working class men and women to eat it if they want. A sad day for Austalian cuisine.

This is bad. We have Marmite which is similar and is apparantly a natural mosquito repellant, if you eat it for a couple of weeks before being exposed to mozzies they don't like the smell.

Marmite is brilliant on toast and in marmite and crisp sandwiches. It's wonderful for keeping amorous husbands away too!!:sneaky:

Now I was partial to the crisp sandwiches myself, and the classic chip butty, but a marmite and crisp sandwich? That is just wrong. I more cucumber and aromat sprinkles on top, now thats a clean, smooth sandwich. :wah:

Vegemite

2000

When life's a royal pain in the ass

And innards seethe with nasty gas

Kiss it better, make it right

Smear yer toast with vegemite

When folk around give you the shits

And work is really mega pits

Bite the bullet, see the light

Hang in there with vegemite

This black brew puts hair on yer pex

And guarantees exotic sex

It makes ya smile, it cures the blues

Goes really great with aussie booze

And if the world goes down the toilet

You'll still be smiling - no grot will spoilet

You know that in the darkest night

There's always pots of vegemite

Add it to your life - and bliss

Will come with every salty kiss.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Postscript

2006

When ForumGard'ners take the mickey

Don't flounce or sulk, just take a sickie

Go down the beach, Who needs a fight!

The lifeguards all love vegemite

Durned foreigners don't understand

So now they've made it contraband

But life goes on, Sports, never fear

So listen up, yeah, have a beer

You know when something neat gets banned

It's gonna be in big demand

I own the stock, so this is nice

I can supply - but at a price

Us aussies are not known for whining

And each cloud has a silver lining

So roll up Mates, I'll see you right

You know you crave my vegemite

Did I put enought grinning emoticons in here so all the Americans know I'm not being deadly serious and/or anti-American ???

:-5 :D

!!!!!!! In fact I was trying - obviously not very successfully - to start a humorous thread. (It's my working Monday here so I've not been online for a bit and sheesh I've returned to some behind the scenes **** in another forum..

ForumGardeners are of course slow to anger and at all times gentle and caring. So this post is purely theoretical and pre emptive.. big goofy smile

I love America. I love Americans.. :-4 I love skiing in Colorado. I got family there. I got friends there. I understand the language. I am getting used to baseball. I have eaten grits and possum on the half shell... I can drink Budweiser.

AND

I don't really like vegemite. It sucks. Narsty foreign food begotten in long ago Aussie depression times - the sanitised version of bread and scrape (the solidified meat juice on top of cooking fat). YUCK!!

Dunno how to delete a thread but maybe I should stick to safer topics for a while.

I like your thread, Pam! :)

I once met in person an Australian friend and we exchanged presents from our regions. She brought me Vegemite but it ended up in someone else's bag so I never even got a smell. But i guess I didn't miss anything then? :wah:

There was a paragraph in this morning's newspaper to say the United States Government had not banned vegemite, and that it was all some strange mistake / media beat-up / alien abduction conspiracy scenario.

I remember my Granpa telling me that he thought vegemite, or the idea behind it, originated in depression times here, when it was common to scrape any meat juice off the top of cooking fat and spread it on bread. He had quite fond memories of "bread and scrape".

There was a time too, before overprocessed and fast food, when kids or sick older people were given vegemite very thinly spread on plain toast or with mashed potato This was easily digestible and replaced salt lost due to illness or Australian summer heat.

So it's kind of remained an Aussie icon - manufactured I understand by an American company.
