I just finished reading the most heinous historical event thread, and it's kind of depressing what humans are capable of. SO.... let's turn the tables and remind ourselves of the most amazing wonderful events in history?! Please!?

So fresh from that thread, I'm having a little trouble thinking of any. What does come to mind is the firefighters, and police and all involved in the 911 brief search and rescue, and then the clean up directly afterwards.

Carter was president when they were taken in 1979 and Reagan was a fresh president when they returned in 1981

Pulling "Little Jessica" Out of the Well (seeing that man grab her and hold her to him as he carried her to her parents broke my heart) It's not only that a little girl's life was saved. It also meant a lot to me because at the very instant they freed her, everyone in America (and maybe other places if they knew about it) was right there alongside, even though it was only by TV. It was strangers coming together for The Good and that made comrades out of common strangers. I can't remember the name of the guy who carried her out but the image remains forever.)



Amie, I'm sorry you were bummed out by the other thread. But I'm very glad you started this one! It's good to remind oneself why it feels good to be human.

It's an interesting point you raise because although there are wonderful historical points they so often follow on from devastation and tragedy.

What does come to mind is the firefighters, and police and all involved in the 911 brief search and rescue, and then the clean up directly afterwards.
Likewise in the London bombings, great human compassion and wonderful emergency responses follow diabolical destruction and death! Its almost a balance, showing you can't have the good without the bad or the bad without the good. As Einstein said - for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

I missed this thread but I'm guessing that most of the scenarios given had this ying-yang effect. Maybe that's just life. Maybe its impossible to have something good happen without at some point experiencing something bad? They say you have to have bad things happen, so you can appreciate when the good things happen. Otherwise good becomes ordinary. I don't know if what I'm saying makes any sense at all, but it makes sense to me. Hope it helps.

At the Mallard Observatory just outside Cambridge they're developing an optical interferometer that would knock Hubble into a cocked hat. Put that into space and you'd read a car numberplate on the far side of Jupiter

Seriously, doing with visible light what radio telescopes do in the 21cm band will bew a huge step forward.

If we're talking about inventions then I guess the printing press....it bought the written word to everyone in the form of books and newspaers etc. Once there was education for EVERYONE, access to books has made an enormous contribution to the world....books, comics, newspapers bring us pleasure, information, education...the list is endless

I think the level of donations of blood from people following 9-11. I worked at a restaraunt and we donated several food platters to the blood bank up the street. When I went to drop it off there was a line (or cue) of hundreds wrapped around the building waiting to give blood.
