Do you have a favorite holiday? One that has special memories, traditions, fun times.

Tell us about it. What makes a certain holiday special to you?

I used to like Christmas..as we tradionally had a big family gathering. It was fun. Unfortunatly, with the family members spread far and wide now, we do not do it anymore. But it was fun when we did.

The day always ended with a group of folks around the dining room table playing Eucre.

Thanksgiving. Its the most pure of the holidays, its not diluted with false creations of forced gift giving which have nothing to do with the actual event. Hear that grinch humper ?

That and New Zealand Boxing Day.

(just because its so rich in New Zealand boxing)

Thanks for the question Marie!

I love Halloween. It is my favorite. I suppose technically it isn't considered a holiday but I treat it like one :D I think my childhood memories stick with me and I always loved being scared and getting candy and now I just love watching the little kiddies dress up and seeing them out trick or treating. Autumn is also my favorite time of year so that just adds to it :)

Christmas. I love the look and feel of it. If we're lucky and have snow I like the look and feel of it even more. I love the hustle and bustle of putting up the decorations, last minute shopping, the baking. Mostly i love having our family all together, the laughter and smiles, the collection of yet another year of memories that will make us smile in years to come.

We don't go overboard with gift giving , we never have. For me, Christmas is not about spending lavish or ridiculous amounts of money. That somehow the season has become far too commercialized saddens me.

Thanksgiving is my favorite. There's the wonderful food, but what I love most is visiting and fun we have after gorging ourselves. There's usually a game of Monopoly where my fathernlaw beats the pants off everyone. Then it's spades and heel and foot.

I love Chrstmas with all the carols and lights. But I don't care for the hustle and bustle. And as with Christmas I love Thanksgiving because the family gets together and shares a great dinner and play games and catch up on things.

But my favorite is Halloween. I love Halloween parties and dressing up and laughing at other people and myself.

Oh and I also love Groundhogs day. Don't ask me why.

To me this question is like asking which of your kids you like most...

I think I like alot of holidays, just that I like them in different ways...

I like Christmas because it brings everyone together and not just all of ones family...You can say what you will about marketing exploitations, but if you ask me, people tend to give more from their heart at Christmas than from their pocket book...besides, if Christmas became relatively expedient, most people usually cut down on their expenditures throughout the year so that Christmas isn't too much of a burden,..so it all pans out...Of course, in such cases, one may believe its the people who are benefiting from all of the drop in sales prices around Christmas time...Charlie Daniels said it best when he said "There will always be more of us, than there will ever be of you"...:wah: ;)

I like thanksgiving because of what it represents to me, which is a life that I have been fortunate enough to have been blessed with, in that my health and wellness is something that is of no immediate concern to me, and for that I am very thankful.

I like the Fourth of July because of the sense of freedom that I feel when I have the choice to do as I please. No boundaries, and no law(aside from common sense -- which I happen to agree with)...

I like the New Year because it allows all of us as human beings to reflect on our lives, and to fulfill our own duties within ourselves that we should be obligated to make an effort to better ourselves, to better our past discrepancies, and to make an attempt to move in the right direction.

And last but not least,

I love Christmas, always have...wonderful childhood memories. I agree with what was already said about the commercialism though, that takes so much away from the true meaning. I love to give gifts and get together with loved ones and eat all the goodies...which brings me to Thanksgiving...Very special Holiday also, Family gets together for big meal and then we play games, a relaxing day that we just enjoy each other, no hustle and bustle...(that's the next day--BLACK FRIDAY)....

Hallowe'en and Valentine's Day both vie for the number one spot with me. I love Hallowe'en for the mystical reasons and because it's a sacred day for me. I love the dark aspect and the magic. I can do without the bloody monsters and Freddy Krueger costumes though. That kind of spoils it for me.

Valentine's Day is less about romance and more about friends and family for me. I go in for all the pink and red and hearts everywhere, stuffed animals, heart shaped boxes, over-the-top mushy cards. It's important that people know you love them and I would be very sad if I did not receive a valentine. It would crush me. :(

Christmas has its own special meaning to me which I won't go into here and I ignore the commercial aspect of it, paying attention instead to my loved ones. I was a grinch for a while but I got over it. I love the smell of pine trees and the glitter, lights, tinsel, red and green and gold, presents, giving and getting, candy and cookies, even some of the music. I'm crazy about tree ornaments, pretty christmas cards and snow. I like that the earth is sleeping and everything will come anew again in the spring. Sleeping yes, but winter is never "dead" to me. It's my favorite season.

Never cared much for Easter. Thanksgiving is important to me because of my family and friends and my animals and many blessings. It is also important to me as an American. It upsets me that we can no longer have Thanksgiving without people putting it our face that it's a day of mourning for American Indians. Why can't we celebrate the fact that they apparently helped us when we got here and leave the sad stuff to another day? Okay, I don't want to ruin this thread, sorry.

Those are my main holidays. And I too like Groundhog Day! :D
