2000 Jetta here. I was thinking about getting a Chiltons manual and trying some repairs on my own. I already know this idea is too stupid to consider yet here I am considering it anyway.

Heres my list of to do's

-shocks

-windshield wiper linkage replacement

-engine shroud (underneath)

Mechanically speaking I fall somewhere between inept and generally incompetent. Anyone care to talk me out of it ?

1st 2 wouldn't probably give you much trouble... but the last might.

Some of those things get really almost "fused" and are hard to break

free unless you have some powerful tools...

I can buy stuff which needs assembly and make it work even though I have several pieces left (I reason that I have discovered deliberate redundancy in some products) that I could fix someone's car and not worry about having a few bits left over. Of course I suppose something from IKEA and your average car might be a bit different. But it's still the same principle so I'd give it a go.

Yea ok. Your hired.

NOT:rolleyes:

Ok well you seem like you know what your doing. Ill get back to ya. Later. Im not sure when though. It might be awhile.:-3

-shocks - YOU NEED SPECIAL TOOLS FOR THESE !

-windshield wiper linkage replacement - A BIT FIDDLY

-engine shroud (underneath) - NOT TOO GOOD FOR YOUR BAD BACK

I've done a 'mental' "Risk Assesssment" and ....do it ONLY if you've got:-

A lot of spare time

Alternative vehicle in case it takes a long time to do

The correct tools

Good manual dexterity

A lot of patience

Adequate health Insurance :D

Enough savings to pay for a PROFESSIONAL if it all goes horribly wrong.

Nomie don't attempt #3 leave that to a professional. :driving: It you don't have a lift for the car so you can work under it you won't get far with the shocks either.

What's the cost to have all three done by a mechanic??? :driving: Save yourself some agony, and frustration VW's are a not fun to work on, well at least the old bug weren't.
