I've designed a few sites in the last while, mostly informational, and something struck me as a good thing to ask. Who else hates bright, busy sites that have flashy things all over them?

spot and I both browse the web in grey, blue and black override settings with most images turned off. I find it essential when I'm looking at the screen all day long. But we aren't the "average user".

Do people really like flashy jumpy things that buzz every time you click a link?

(I was going to put bright fonts all over this post as example but when I click on the font colour choices they are all blank...the way I like it!)

I do not like busy sites-flashing signs and banners are distracting, and I am not likely to view that site at all.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'd hate to have to design things like that.

Still, somebody must like 'em. Come on, :yh_wave own up.

Here's one of the Worst of the Web pics for September, 2006. I just grabbed an example at random. There are far worse. But lets analyse what is or isn't good about it.

No I dont care for that unless its the kind of site that warrants it, vacation site or something. I like your sites the way they are. Less is more and a little bit dark. The colors I mean. Subtley refined elegant

For me an attractive home page aside from content, requires 2 or 3 colors tops. The colors should compliment eachother and the text should be pleasing yet easy to read. The lighting should be like a lit lamp as opposed to florescent overheads. In other words the front page should draw people in and make them comfortable immediately.

That's really quite refined. Try this POS:

http://www.insitumedia.co.uk/

Edit:

Or this:

http://www.clothtag.co.uk/01%20-%20Clot ... /index.htm

If I see that sort of thing, and don't *really* *really* *need* to go there - off!

The colours and overall design are ok. two big problems.

1) I still can't see straight after watching the intro (I usually skip them)

2) When I skipped the intro I had no idea what they do for the longest time.
