Who were you in high school? Were you a jock, a brain, an outsider, a popular person or...?

Who are you now? What "role" do you think you play in life?

I was a quiet, sensitive child who was left alone a lot and bullied at times, I hated senior school until sixth form when most of the bullies left.

I used to find talking to people difficult if I didn't know them until one day I decided that it was rediculous to be like that and made the effort to talk and join in conversations.

Now - well, that's not me any more, I'll talk to anyone about anything, have a few close friends and a lot of aquaintances.

I had big self esteem problems until a few years ago when I got counselling for it which really helped me see that the way I see myself is not necessarily the way others see me.

The best thing I did was join the Special Constabulary at 20 years old, it gave me confidence, comradeship with others, a brilliant social life and I met my husband through it.

I can honestly say that I am happy with who I am most of the time.

Great thread, Red :)

I was one of the brains, in all accelerated classes. I was kind of outside the popular group -- I was a little slow socially and did not actually date until I went to college.

Now, many years later, I've grown into myself. Self-acceptance was a long time coming for me. It's always a work in progress, but the journey is well worth it :-6

My city/school had money and my family didn't, so I was a member of the less-accepted group and we had ENORMOUS fun together, although I remember being sad when I didn't have the clothes that other girls did! College was out of the question for most of us, so we plunged into life--after all, we already KNEW everything, ya' know!

Now, I'm a person who genuinely enjoys life and feels she gives something of value to the community around me.

I wouldn't have had anything any other way.

Thanks everyone who has posted so far! :)

Minks, Cher, thank you; I'm glad you like the thread.

I tended to fall in between the regular and weird kids. I was smart and funny but I had my own ideas too so was considered "different" and you know what that usually means. :wah: I was mostly a loner but I did always have my small group of friends of two or three. I befriended kids who were more outcast than I was, the underdogs, and that has stuck to this day. I had a rebellious streak when it came to authority and not questioning why I was told to do something or to think a certain way. That's still a part of me now.

I think now I'm just a regular person who tries to bloom where she's planted. I still don't like authority and I still try to do my own thinking, still keep a tiny group of friends, still have a strange sense of humor. I don't think I'm as "different" as everyone back then expected me to be.

Interesting thread Red..;)

I was a Jockette so to speak if there was a sports team at school I was on it, well except Gymnastics never could get the hang of it. :wah: I even won some ribbons in Track and Field. I had 1 sister who also attened the same school as me so we always had friends all throught out school. It was a wonderful time in my life I enjoyed it very much..

As an Adult I'm pretty much the same Jockette have played many adult sports from Women Softball, Baseball (hard ball not soft), three pitch slow pitch, Soccer (fotbal), tennis (really bad it), Racquet Ball (really good at it) was even in some doubles tournaments. We are all very athletic in my family just born that way.

As I was as a child being a team player is what I am in my work life as well.

Adult Guynastics I got a handle on pretty young.. :wah:

LULU2 it was actually painful for others to watch me try and do the "pommal horse" [sp] or back flips. The Gym teacher came to me one day and said you athletically excel at almost any sport, give up Gymnastics before you hurt yourself.:-5

I moved around alot, by the time I graduated I had attended over 8 different schools. I attended high school thankfully at one school. I wasn't a total nerd, but academics is where I excelled.

What I find funny though, is when I was registering for high school, the vice principal told me if I wanted to be popular I had to be in band and athletics.

They certainly can be, LC. It always astounds me when I see mean children.

Isn't that supposed to be the time of life when things are easy and carefree? :( :-6

All of them, done several sports, in all the top classes, did not mix with most of the other kids but was popular with the ones that knew me.

Only difference now is I'm older and lazy.

I was in the group labeled collegiate. Member of sorority Alpha Sigma Gamma.

Drama club. I was in many of the school plays.. or worked behind the scenes.

Very social, tons of friends.. also known as a commedienne. My favorite subjects were English, public speaking, drama. I was a strictly average student... but that was without really ever opening a book to study. I grew up in a really nice neighborhood, had a job, always, from the time I was 14.

I wish I had never discovered boys... then I would have applied myself more in school, and really have become something. Now, I am pretty introverted. Very choosy about who I spend any free time with. My intersts evolved over the years to gardening, painting, sewing. Most things creative, and most things that are pursued alone.

Good thread Idea, in school I wasn't very popular and was a mouthy outsider who got bullied, then I learned to punch straight and play the guitar and that all changed. In college I was a science student so I had to work hard, to relieve the stress of that I was part of the Irish Society in Essex Uni where I did my degree, which was basically an excuse for the Irish lads to gang together, get some SU cash and bring our English and other non-Irish friends on booze ups to Dublin, I also got my Irish band to come over and play for the Irish nights that we held, we did about 3 and they were great as since they were Irish nights everyone came along, got pissed, and danced around to jigs and reels, we played to about a 1,000 drunk crazy students each time, it was a blast and our British friends really enjoyed themselves and had the craic (as we say) with us. We were the second biggest society as on registering day we had a stand where we handed out free cans of guinness, and invited the entire college to a session in our dorm (I do remember that about 80 percent of our society was female, which says something about the ability of Irish fellas to get girls drunk and charm them into joining societies dedicated to drinking and debauchery!

Now I am a science person who works mostly in writing and publishing, though I am trying to get back into research, and I am a musican as well, I've played with a few different acts, and I am currently putting a new album for myspace, (hence the new avatar) life has had its ups and downs since college as life is never that easy, but in general I can't complain. :-6

I started highschool as a soccer player but switched to basketball. I knew lots of kids but only went to one party. After the first social gathering I realised that I didn't fit in. Not because they treated me different but because I felt like an alien sat in the corner trying to make sense of these odd creatures. After that I stayed in my room reading books until, one day, I fell in love.

There was a girl at the school who stood out from the rest, she had shocking black hair, pale face, artistic clothing and always a big smile on her face. I thought she was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. I still think so. She even invited me to a party with her friends but I never went. I was afraid of the same disappointment. I don't know if she ever figured out how much I loved her. It doesn't matter anyway. After that, I lost my fear of being different and found others who felt the same way.

*************

I haven't changed much. I've been married and had a child and every year I find something new to be astonished with. A few days ago I sat by the window, smoking a cigarette and looking out at the people walking by. I realised that every time I go outside I feel like I'm entering "their" world and I thrill at being able to get things done without either giving myself away or disrupting anything before I return.

in high school, i was just 2 years behind my sister who was very popular. so, i decided not to be like her and be loner. i was very overweight and no-one really talked to me. after i left highschool lost 50 pounds and no-one even reconises me. went to college got married to first husband, very very rich man, then got rid of him treated me very bad ,physically and mentally, then put myself into my work and now i am working for retail giant and i am regional claims manager. still want to finish college just cant decide what to finish in. forensic psycology or just sycology. but, any how, maybe i should thank the people in high school for treating me bad. i would of never pushed myself. now i have a great job and wonderful family. medical problems hopefully will just be a little detour in my goals. tazz:D

I get sad when I read about my friends here being bullied in high school :-1

I always befriended the underdog. In 2nd grade (I was about 7 years old), there was a boy named Bradley Weinberg that nobody played with. He was kind of goofy looking with no social skills at all. I felt so bad for him.

When the recess bell would ring, whoever grabbed the big red schoolball got to play with it outside. One day, I ran fast and grabbed the ball before anyone else could. I went up to Bradley and said, "Would you like to play ball with me?" He smiled and said, "Sure!"

We went out to the schoolyard and I started to play catch with him. As soon as he caught the ball, he ran away with it to play by himself, leaving me astonished and alone.

Oh well, at least I tried to do the right thing for someone. I still do today, but I try to find a better audience. :-6

I was quiet. I let things happen as opposed to knowing what I wanted and going after it. Im still quiet but I know what I need which is more important than what I want. Im not afraid of people anymore, I dont gab a lot but I enjoy touching people in some small way. Its different for different people.

Then...fairly reserved, quite shy, neither popular nor unpopular, felt more comfortable in the company of a few close friends than in a group, bit of a dreamer, above average academically but rubbish at anything that required me to promote my body, e.g. sports, drama etc.

Now...not a lot has changed and I'm mostly happy with that. I suppose I would like to try out other parts of me that I've buried...I would love to be a total extrovert for a day, or more...
