ANASTROPHE: Interesting question.....D'G & I think that the ever-so-white hand is a reference to the "Ice Truck Killer" and his mode of operation. If you haven't seen this series, you really should, because it uses words well and it's intelligent, as you are.

Yes Lu. I think its an amputated arm too. I dodnt notice until 8 episodes in.
