Windstorms hit So. Calif. HARD!

For the last two days, we've been buffeted and pounded by windstorms...some areas had gusts up to 80-85 mph! Because I live at the bottom of a large canyon, the winds are magnified and even more powerful than areas on flat lands.

My power went out just about 24 hours ago--and the outside temperatures have been in the 40s. (Are you beginning to feel sorry for us?) :wah: I was awake most of the night, listening to the winds as they broke off tree limbs and scoured the streets with branches, leaves and other debris. There was a repeated, very loud CRACKING sound which finally was explained when I saw that the big, eight-foot street barricades left from traffic control after the Rose Parade were literally SAILING around in the air, banging into street lights and curbs! (If a person had been out there, they would've been seriously injured or even killed!)

Interesting just how cold my house gets without heat....it was 61 degrees in here during the afternoon! Not much to do without power, either.....

Imagine how the power workers were scrambling? They got my neighborhood restored about an hour ago...but thousands more are still in the dark.

Good to see you all again!

Naturally, Carla--the computer sat here, silent and dark, causing me great WITHDRAWL PAINS!

Yes, AussiePamelalalaluna....I believe a chilled glass of champers would boost my spirits! Let's toast my new roof! (All night, I'd hear those bloody, howly winds and rejoice that I spent the money to put on a new roof! Sometimes, things work out well!)

This is a tangent, :sneaky: - but that reminded me of the first song I ever learned to play on a geeeetar - Cast Your Fate to the Wind. Loved it, but hey, it changed key.. a lot !!

Song: Windy

Who's peekin' out from

Under a stairway

Callin' a name

That's lighter than air?

Who's bendin' down to

Give me a rainbow?

Everyone knows it's Windy.

Who's trippin' down the

Streets of the city

Smilin' at

Everybody she sees?

Who's reachin' out to

Capture a moment?

Everyone knows it's Windy.

And Windy has stormy eyes

That flash at the sound of lies

And Windy has wings to fly

Above the clouds.

Above the clouds.

And Windy has stormy eyes

That flash at the sound of lies

And Windy has wings to fly

Above the clouds.

Above the clouds.

Who's trippin' down the

Streets of the city

Smilin' at

Everybody she sees?

Who's reachin' out to

Capture a moment?

Everyone knows it's Windy.

Who's trippin' down the

Streets of the city

Smilin' at

Everybody she sees?

Who's reachin' out to

Capture a moment?

Everyone knows it's Windy.

Who's trippin' down the

Streets of the city

Smilin' at

Everybody she sees?

Who's reachin' out to

Capture a moment?

Everyone knows it's Windy.

Who's trippin' down the

Streets of the city

Smilin' at

Everybody she sees?

Who's reachin' out to

Capture a moment?

Everyone knows it's Windy.

+++++++++++ Here, Dear...you can amaze and mystify all your mates at the next party! Put some rubber bands on a cigar box and plunk along! XOXO

Round,

Like a circle in a spiral

Like a wheel within a wheel

Never ending or beginning

On an ever-spinning reel

Like a snowball down a mountain

Or a carnival balloon

Like a carousel that’s turning

Running rings around the moon

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping

Past the minutes on it’s face

And the world is like an apple

Whirling silently in space

Like the circles that you find

In the windmills of your mind

Like a tunnel that you follow

To a tunnel of it’s own

Down a hollow to a cavern

Where the sun has never shone

Like a door that keeps revolving

In a half-forgotten dream

Like the ripples from a pebble

Someone tosses in a stream

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping

Past the minutes on it’s face

And the world is like an apple

Whirling silently in space

Like the circles that you find

In the windmills of your mind

Keys that jingle in your pocket

Words that jangle in your head

Why did summer go so quickly?

Was it something that I said?

Lovers walk along a shore

And leave their footprints in the sand

Was the sound of distant drumming

Just the fingers of your hand?

Pictures hanging in a hallway

Or the fragment of a song

Half-remembered names and faces

But to whom do they belong?

When you knew that it was over

Were you suddenly aware

That the autumn leaves were turning

To the colour of her hair?

Like a circle in a spiral

Like a wheel within a wheel

Never ending or beginning

On an ever-spinning reel

As the images unwind

Like the circles that you find

In the windmills of your mind

How did you all get from storms in california to songs? Its a cool thread though, Lu, you mind yourself in them storms. I hear that San Francisco can get a bit blowey at times, is that the area you are in, or more southern California, LA and all that? The weather in Ireland is brisk, bright, and cold, we have been having terriffic storms this winter, as has Britain, and the water is not going to ground, its running off, because the ground was baked hard last summer, and the water is coming in huge storms instead of steady mild rain as its supposed to do. We might be looking at a 2007 drought, which for the British isles (famously wet) is a bit nuts. As the song goes, "A hard rain's gonna fall"! :(

It's almost always windy in "the city," 'BallyBabe! ("The city," is San Francisco.) We're in LA area, where the mountains funnel winds into odd directions. I hope they're finished for awhile--you should see my garden! :(

Since they're undecided on whether or not we'll be having a "mild el nino" this year, your weather may or may not be effected...but I can't imagine Ireland as anything BUT bright, brisk and cold! (Having just rained, of course!)

Oh we know they call it "The Citeeeee", and they don't like calling it San Fran, or Frisco, I wonder what the people in Oakland think about it. Better leave it alone, don't want to start civil unrest in Northern California.

I don't know what our weather will be like here this year, last year it was either baking hot, or mental storms, I don't like it, I want our old weather back. :(

(I'll never forget taking the train from Dublin down to Cork, passing all the lovely shades of green! And the gardens around Blarney castle were stunning...as were the hills of Killarney. You'd go insane here, living in our near-deserts!)

Ah sure tis a very pretty county when the sun shines, and a wild one when it doesn't. I'd quite like to see a desert, as living in europe we don't really have much of that, but it would be a bit hot for me to live in all the time I think. I've always wanted to see the South West in the US, it would be amazing for me as it seems so different to my own environment. You are lucky that the US has such a varied climate, like Europe in the North East, like the Eurasian Stepps in the midwest, like the alps in the rockies, and then you have things that are uniquely your own and no where else has them. Cool country.

;) Any time, Dollink! I miss the poets...I heard a pseudo-intellectual white woman RHAPSODIZING about how "rap" music is the poetry of our day. Almost made me HURL! Poetry can certainly be angry, no question. But poetry should glorify language--not degrade it.
