In all my 2 years here if a tricky religious question comes up, i always think phew, not touching that - leave that one to Ted

Maybe we all do that too much & so i'd like to take this opportunity to relieve him of his duties in religion & get to know him outwith that subject, anyone else feel the same?

My first question to you Ted is -

Do you cook? Are you a barbecue man, munchies or a secret chef? either way - what's your fav dish & what drink would you have with it? & do you like any kind of alcohol or not?

My wife is an excellent cook. We both like plain and simple foods basically. I try to leave the cooking to her but have on occasion taken over the task. I love to BBQ but as I live in a condo it is not possible. But once in awhile we all get together and use the condo BBQ. We could use it on our own but don't bother.

Do I like an alcoholic drink. Yep. I like beer and good single malt scotch or a good dry red wine. The problem lately has been that it is bothering my stomach so I simply don't drink alcoholic beverages any more.

Patience and tolerance is something that one grows into both by realizing that any other way is hard on the nervous system and the developing wisdom of age. Thirty years in elementary education teaches one patience and tolerance. Though I did gain some from approx. 9 years at university.

As is obvious in my posts in the religious sphere I am quite liberal minded by choice. At one point I was a student minister in the Presbyterian church but chose to go back to my teaching career and then chose to become an Anglican because of its unity in diversity.

I do tend to become a little less patient and tolerant in the face of rudeness and impoliteness. I also guard, with my life, my truthfulness. That became an important part of my life in my career. If I say it, I believe it to be true. I do not wear my religion on my shirt sleeves, so to speak, but it is a way of life for me and not just a set of beliefs.

For fun I can take an opposing viewpoint and make some good arguments but generally do not.

Do you ever sail, Ted? You're in a part of the world where I think that'd be a great choice. Open tidal water always terrifies me in a dinghy but I still go and do it.

What type of clothes do you wear Ted, are you into mostly comfort type or a shirt & tie man?

Do you work or retired, semi retired, are you uber rich (in which case a telephone number will suffice )

Do you have children, grandchildren? if so how old are they, what do they do for a living?

One other thing that tries my patience and tolerance is someone who thinks they are better than anyone else. As far as I can see there is no place in the world for such arrogance.

Do I make use of the sea around me? Alas no, except to take the ferry to the main island (Vancouver Island) a few times a month for Dr. visits and for the volunteer jobs I do as a Senior's Peer Counselor, and on the CNIB Client Services Committee.

Clothing is casual for almost all occasions. I spent 30 years in a suit and tie.

Hobbies: gardening, music, though visually impaired, reading at least as long as I can, studying at the Vancouver School of Theology. some traveling around on a local basis, and very much involved in my church.

I have had dozens of speaking engagements in my life. I don't really know how many. Most have been in the form of church services and sermons but several have been to other groups of people. I have always expressed a more liberal but common sense approach to religious faith.

I have also published articles in the local paper especially taking the local fundamentalists to task on many issues.

Am I a Bible purist? The answer is, without question, no. There are three main sources of authority in the church: The Bible is first, followed by the traditions of the church and both have to display common sense. There are other lesser authorities: the church counsels, writings of great Christians down through the centuries including modern writings. There is also the recognition that the Bible is not an historical document and was never intended to be read that way. I contains some historical facts many times embellished for theological reasons and includes a great deal of metaphor.

Short of studying Hebrew and Greek scholars have recommended that I use the NRSV primarily.

Someone asked earlier about languages. I hope I am fluent in English. I could work my way around France with my French. I have kept up with my New Testament Greek and with some effort I can work my way through the Ancient Hebrew.

What would I say to Pat Robertson? I've never thought about that one but it would probably be deleted by the powers that be. LOL I was once invited to attend a meeting at which he was to be the guest speaker. Needless to say, I declined. My patience and tolerance fails at the thought. LOL

Hi ted, just to say, its nice to see you here in the crazy world of general forums, I always find your posts to be thoughful, dignified and tolerant in threads you post in, which are often anything but those things, as thats the way that religious threads seem to go, a lot.

Just to join in the Ted Q&A, have you ever been to Europe? Maybe even little old Ireland? And have you ever seen "Father Ted", its an Irish comedy about catholic priests, its really quite funny, though the humour might not always translate.

No I've never been past Cape Spear in Newfoundland. That is as close to Europe that one can get in Canada. It is my hope one day to make it though. I would also like to go to Greece and the Holy Land.

Oh I have been in Inverness, I stayed in a nice guest house there, its a pretty town, the capital of the highlands. But I can tell you one thing, it is one cold place. Its not so much the temperature, more the wind and the freezing rain coming in down the huge estuary from the North Sea, of course the scots go out in mini skirts and short sleeved shirts in January, but they are mad as brushes. Still I suppose that coming from Canada, cold weather probably holds no fears for you!

Dry cold is one thing damp cold is another.

We lived near Ottawa for 25 years. One winter we had 13 feet of snow without a January thaw.

Another winter we had 3 weeks when the high for the day was -37* C.

It is generally a dry cold near Ottawa.

One of our children and his partner lives in Vancouver and the other two and their partners live in Nanaimo.
