Oh yeah, I am onto that one, Paris, ah the city of light, reservations at the Ritz, a stroll through the Marais, and dinner at the Cafe Victor Hugo with a charming young lady, a night walk up the seine to Isle De La Cite, and then the metro home to Pigalle (I can't afford anywhere more glitizy, and anyway, I like red light distircts) of course you have to avoid the rioters as well, and be careful of your wallet, but ah Paris.

I hear you, Galbers !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just read the "favourite junk food' thread.. and so am even more driven to head for somewhere where food is not deep fried twinkies or buffalo wings with deep friend peanut butter sauce and four cheese topping..

I'm currently actually looking at getting an apartment in Montmartre for late April. I've never stayed that end of town before, but my daughter is desperate for un petit noir at dawn in the Rue des Abbesses.. whatever turns you on!!

Jeez thats mad, I know a very nice australian girl who actually lives in the Rue de Abbesses would you believe!!!!!!!!!:-2 !!!!!, (just friends BTW), and I have stayed in her flat, its pretty nice up round there actually, its gone a bit upmarket I think, though the area still has some dodgy spots. Weird huh? I bet if your daughter goes there, they would probably hear each other's accents one day in that cafe down the street and get talking! A lot of coincidnces going on around here lately. As for the petit noir, like you said, whatever your into! Yes, and of course the food is the best thing, man if I lived in paris I would definetly be about 3 stone heavier, god you can just walk around all day eating, and the patisseries, oh boy, pan o chocolat for breakfast, there people know how to live! :wah:

The film 'Amélie' has a lot to answer for, Galbers!! I expect I shall be taking Romy to the Canal St Martin to skip stones. I'd really like to drag her over to the Rue Mouff on market day. Bit touristy, but fun. And thinking of fun - most Sundays there's a fun run in the Bois de Boulogne.. and then ya watch the old codgers from the south messing around with their boules, well petanque... :sneaky: Do you get across the water often?

I'm hoping to get some hiking in too in the Gaeltacht.

Seriously though, my friend really does live on the rue de abessess, are you going to move anywhere near there, its all monmarte isn't it? The last time I was in Paris was in april, I was just hanging out with her and our American friend who lives in London, who I was also hanging out with in London, (Kensington, very nice). I know quite a lot of aussies in London as there are a lot of them there, they seem to like it, and don't mind the rain so much.

So you are also planning a trip to the Gaelteacht as well eh? So Galway, Donegal, Claire, Kerry? Which one? You will love it, if you havn't been there before, and of course you have great Irish (way better than me), god I wish I had your gift for languages.

You are way too kind on the language thing. My Irish is rusty as heck, I'll hafta get out me books and work on that a bit. I'm in the process of arranging a weeks independent walking round the Dingle area. Will have company to and from Tralee and then launch out on my own. Looking forward to it. Solo walking is how I keep sane, well... my kinda sane.

The Rue des Abbesses is sort of just down hill from all the kerfuffle in the Place du Tertre... so you get normal Parisians there. That metro also has one of the last original art deco signs. Nice. The apartment we're looking at is just off the R des A.

Yes, Rue De Abessess, when you look out of her window, you are looking up the hill, which is quite steep as well, its a nice street I think, some nice shops, not too busy, some nice cafes down a few doors from her flat as well, so its nice in the summer to hang out, and not have to go into the city centre, I have also been at that metro entrance as well, its down the road from where she is.

As for Dingle, sure me dears I know it well, I have stayed in Dingle Town, Ventry, and up at the cottages near Inch beach. Dingle is just brilliant, you will love it, Mt Brandon and the connor pass are spectacular, and there are lots of places to walk, make sure and go up mt brandon, its fanastic, but be careful at the top cause on one side its a gently slope up to the summit, the other is a sheer 3,000 footd drop into Irelands only fiord. Also, make sure to get yourself across Dingle bay to the Beara pennisula and the Ring of Kerry, you have to see Moll's Gap and the Magilicuddy Reeks, they are spectacular as well, I love west kerry, its gods own country. You will have to tell me what you make of it when you get there! And don't worry you will soon brush up on the Irish over there, though of course people will speak english to you as well. You are very good at languages, don't be bashful about it, its a gift!
