My Grand-dog chews her foot constantly? Is it a yeast infection, an allergy or is she "sTrEssED out!

Hi Paula, Charlie my mums dog had the same problem so i took him to the vets & he had an infection under a nail, but as she is part of YOUR family she's probably stressed out!!!! (just joking with you) :D

Paula, what breed of dog is it? It could be any one of the things you mentioned, but most likely an allergy. And the only way to be sure is a vet check. Skin allergies are common in several breeds, and easily controlled with a steroid like prednisone.

I have never heard of such a thing. What *you want is the "Doglopaedia", available online.

I would first take a really close look at what she is eating. There are an awful

lot of poor-quality foods out there, and lots of dogs get allergies to things

in food. Corn meal is a biggie, but it can be just about anything.

I would try one of these:

Chicken Soup For the Dog Lovers Soul

Canidae

Solid Gold

Royal Canin

Nutro Max

Nutro Natural Choice

Innova

Wellness

If you have some of the dog's food left, I would slowly make the switch by

mixing in a little of the old with the new, adding a bit more each day.

Too fast a change may cause the poops, and we certainly can't have that

now can we? ;)

They may seem more expensive to begin with, but you usually will feed

less. And the dog eventually will have fewer, firmer poops.

Good luck and let us know!

:D

You know, the other thing I thought about this that it might be... boredom!

Does this dog get exercise? Is it left alone all day? Sometimes they chew

out of frustration...

If it does turn out to be allergies, the snacks should be limited to something

like boiled skinless chicken breast. They love it and it's very easily tolerated.

There IS such a thing as loving them too much, grandma!!

Boredom

Bored Dogs lick and chew, yes even themselves. It is most noticible on white dogs as they saliva tends to turn their fur brown over time.

Couldn't remember what indicated boredom... I could only think of loss of fur from licking, wasn't sure about the chewing of themselves.

My Bounce chews the door frames, I've just recently redyed all the chewed areas, he tends to only do it now if he can't get his own way eg. locked out of the bedroom when my bf is here.

Don't know what kind of dog you have but have you tried toys? Ever heard of

something called a Kong? A little peanut butter spread in a kong and voila

hours of fun and enjoyment for the dog and peace for you!

He's okay now he's older, it was more when he was a puppy... He has always had so many toys and it's often like a mine field when you walk through the door with toys scattered everywhere.

I've mentioned before he has seperation anxiety, it's become better over the year (he's a little over 1 year old), he realises that when you leave you will be back, but when he was a puppy it was really hard.

I began to use curry powder on anything that he wasn't supposed to chew, he soon learned, think curry has to be the only thing he won't eat :wah:

Toys, he's had a knog since he was a puppy, the best one now is a ball that you can record your voice on and fill with treats, everytime the ball moves they hear you and get treats. I have to turn it off though.

A bone gives hours of peace to the owner and contentment to the dog... It's heaven when he has his bone :-6
