Leaps in ultrasound technology have revealed Vanishing Twin Syndrome for the first time, giving expectant mothers a better understanding of life - and death - in the womb.
Channel 4's Miracles in the Womb programme has created amazing footage from life-like models based on the latest 4D ultrasound images.
And for the first time ever it has captured Vanishing Twin Syndrome whereby another baby begins to develop, dies and is absorbed into the womb leaving an empty sack
It is thought one in eight of us had a twin who died in this way and researcher Althea Hayton from Wombtwin.com said vanishing Twin Syndrome can leave people with a huge sense of loss.
She said: "It stands to reason if you began your existence in the company of another little tiny person just at the moment when your brain began to develop - if something else was there that would be part of your idea of the way things are.
"I have had adults in their 60s who have seen an enormous improvement in their life because at last they have understood this thing that has haunted them all their life."
This is interesting especially if you believe that the soul enters the foetus enters the body at the time of conception.
