1 large egg

2oz plain flour } or multiples of these for more pancakes

3oz milk

Whisk, leave for a few hours, melt a little lard in the pan, do your pancake very

thinly indeed, twizzling the pan to coat the bottom, flip the pancake as soon

as it slides on the bottom of the frying-pan, dish up on a hot plate with white

sugar and lemon juice. Thick pancakes must not be made.

Hi Red:-6 ,

I started with the kids when they was tiny, they thought it was hillarious watching me toss the pancakes and then hear me cursing whilst picking it up from the floor! They then used to decorate them, the favourite was hundreds and thousands with lemon and sugar, they'd eat a couple of mouthfuls then try to feed me their creations.:D

PS. The kids now toss their own and they still end up on the floor:-5

We keep the syrup in the fridge so I asked my daughter to put it in the microwave, I must of told her 10 times to pour it over the plate, what did she do, turned round to talk to her brother!!!! I had to spend ten minutes cleaning the oven and washing the floor:-5

Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day)

Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the period which Christians call Lent. This day is one of the moveable feasts in the church calendar and is directly related to the date on which Easter falls.

Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before to Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between February 3 and March 9. (See our Lent page for a visual explanation why Shrove Tuesday is 47 days and not 41 days before Easter)

In 2007 Pancake Day will be on 20 February

and in 2008 it will be on 5 February.

Where does the word Shrove come from?

The name Shrove comes from the old word "shrive" which means to confess. On Shrove Tuesday, in the Middle Ages, people used to confess their sins so that they were forgiven before the season of Lent began.

Shrove Tuesday a time for celebrations

Shrove Tuesday is a day of celebration as well as penitence, because it's the last day before Lent.

Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent.

What is a pancake?

A pancake is a thin, flat cake, made of batter and fried in a pan.

The photograph shows a pancake being cooked in a frying pan.

Other names for Shrove Tuesday

In England we call Shrove Tuesday, Pancake Day.
