As I have mentioned I am a skills for life tutor...among other subjects...

I am trying to think of ways the department could attract males...... so what I am looking for are ideas of courses that I could develop in the future that may attract male students. Courses can be run at either the college campus or within the local community, such as, schools and community centres...... I was even thinking of running some sort of course at a pub

Thoughts I have had so far..... Job search, how to buy and sell on eBay, I.T and football coaching. The course must have a basic skills element added in or it would not be funded..... so girls if you can ask your male family members and lads if you have any ideas.......I would be very interested in your views/ideas

Thank you

Hmm good question. I think the suggestions you already have are good. I know when I was looking for college courses, that most of the IT based courses were all male and seemed to get good attendance.

Perhaps you could have some sort of fitness class, which looks at how to keep yourself fit, and can have some sort or physical side such as 5-a-side games along with any study work.

Webpage design is a good one too and those courses seem to be in very short supply!

life skills eh? Well, a lot of fella's would be into cars, so you could do basic car engineering, or you could do video game development, or maybe sports management, you know get them managing their local little fottie teams, and give them some tips. You could also do various design things, lads like certain design things be it furniture design, product design, all that (they won't admit it though), you might want to stay away from weapon design, as that could become controversial. You could also do skills I suppose, things like mountaineering and survival and first aid, cause lads like to feel capable, and maybe thrown in a few technical and sciency things, but you need to give them cool names, that attracts the punters. Any of them sound any good??

hmmmmmm

this reminds me of a session I had with a group of hairdressers the other week.... we were looking at communication skills and I asked them to think of a subject that they would like to discuss...... they decided on the age of consent for sex...should it be higher or lower..... during the discussion an 18 year old blurted out..could a girl get pregnant from having oral sex!!!

blooming hell whats happened to sex education!

I guess it's as much about the course, as how you are advertising them... I would suggest that you advertise your courses in male dominated places. (probably not the pub)

Courses I would suggest are......

Advanced Excel

Presentation Skills

Interview Tips

How to write a CV

Find the USP (Unique Selling Point)

Cultural awareness

and.........................

MAP READING or HOW TO ASK FOR DIRECTIONS!!!:wah:
