I have this obsession with symmetry. If I stretch one arm or leg I have to stretch the other. If the window blinds are open they have to be open the same height. Can't leave a picture crooked on the wall....

I like some asymmetrical stuff that is designed that way but only if it is well designed to maintain balance.

You?

(jimbo, we know you're unbalanced already)

When I put things on a shelf, I try to arrange it so both sides of the shelf have equal visual weight.

I won't beat anyone silly for putting a soup can in the cupboard with the label the wrong way, if that's what you mean.

Just give them a dirty look. :wah:

ok - this is getting wierd!

I'm exactly the same! I suffer from OCD, which means that everything has to be 'even' in every way!

I've recently admitted that I have OCD issues.

The important thing is to be able to laugh about it.

I like my OCD. :-6

I suffered terribly with it through my teens and early 20s. As a result I was medicated, sectioned and had a LOT of psychiatric treatment.

I'm on top of it now and haven't been on the pills for over 4 yrs, but it's something that I have to be aware of.

You and I seem to be quite similar creatures. :-4

Symmetry is beauty. I don't know if we live in a binary universe but I do know symmetry is innately appreciated in humans.

Koan - find a picture by Piet Mondrian. One that springs to mind is "Broadway Boogie-Woogie" I think it's called. Now block out (in your mind's eye) one of the big colour squares - the big ones, not the tiny ones. Does it look all wrong? It should. I remember my art teacher telling me that in high school. Take a segment out and it's all unbalanced. Symmetry is really beauty.

I actively hate Mondrian's art. :wah:

eta: but I love William Blake

I seem to remember seeing dresses which nicked a few ideas from De Stijl - in fact if I'm not wrong I think Mary Quant might have ripped it off. Oh - I'll probably be sued now - c'est la vie.

Blake - what a wonderful talent, poetry, painting, music, mysticism - who can't be move by Jerusalem and it doesn't even have to be at the last night of the Proms.

Right that's that then.

Back into phillistine mode.

Gawd! I can't stand Mondrian! But I guess thats because I don't consider what Mondrian does to be an 'art' it's more conceptualist work......

Now Blake is one of my very favourite artists - I did a tryptich based on his spirit of albion many years ago.

I do things like that too. Like money always has to be arranged to face the same direction. I dunno, I just like things to look 'neat' I guess.....:D

I've got a thing about cushions being neat on the sofa :D

Even to the point that if I was to walk past a sofa store I always get irritated if the cushions are messy I just want to go in and arrange it :-3

I enjoy the Pre-Raphaelites for example and I like Mondrian as well. For me I let my eye wander over the Pre-Raphaelites but I like to engage with Mondrian, I can almost see the traffic lights changing in "Broadway Boogie Woogie".

I agree completely! Tracey Emin is a conceptualist, and a damned good one, but an artist she is not!

I adored the Pre-raphelite era, and had the Renaissance period not had such political importance to me, then I would have majored in that era. I was in LOVE with Dante Gabriel Rosetti when I was about 17!

i have a ocd cousin that loves gardening...he and i are the exact opposites...he takes a half an hour to pick out the perfectly shaped plant...me? i grab wichever one looks healthy..crooked , leaning, what ever....this drives john nuts...everytime he waits untill he thinks i am not looking and replaces my plant with what he thinks is a better symetrical one.....cracks me up.............he hasn't figured out yet that i deliberately get the loppy plants just to mess with his head............

and i have a set of earrings i wear when i used to have to deal with my dad..one is a mouse and the other is a cat..opposite ears...they dont match and my dad would have a fit....and i loved it...........:p because there was absolutely no way to get his approval and the earrings reminded me to not even try.............

I must have 'order' in my life and that includes 'symetry'.

Ornaments have to be 'grouped' in 3s, 5s,7s etc.

Towels must hang 'just so' and match.

Cans and jars in the cupboards must have the labels facing the right way.

A room has to be decorated in neutral colours with only ONE proper colour as an accent colour.

I can't mix gold and silver jewellry

Photo or picture frames in a particular room must match

My car must be parked accurately between the lines in the car park

Clothes in my wardrobe are 'grouped' by colour and type.

Books on the shelves are displayed in descending size ~ largest on the leftI really worry about myself sometimes ! :D :D :D

OH NO.....I couldn't be more different!

For me life is far too short and busy...... to spend my time making sure my house is just so..... I have messy kids and a busy work life...... plus i think my kids would be uncomfortable in a house that had things in its place!

But got to admit....I sometimes dream of having a lovely just so house........ maybe when the kids have grown up.....hehehehe but then again life would be even shorter!!!:wah:

Evil. That's the only word for it.

Rosette, yes, having kids around makes keeping a house in order near impossible.

the problem all starts when you highlight something after you quote it and insert more code.

Just make sure you highlight only the text and all will be well.

I only tell you because this is a thread about nitpicking and balance and I worry that you might cause a homicidal flare in one of us if you don't stop.
