Hi! I have a question. I have some DVDs I want to copy for a friend. I have never done this before and know nothing.

1. will the cd/dvd burner on my modem work okay or do I need something different?

2. Do I need a special burning program and what do you recommend? (easy please)

3. what brand/kind of discs do I need to buy for good quality copies?

4. Anything else you think I should know?

You need to find which is compatible with your recorder..and with your friends player. There are DVD-R and DVD+R. We have found that the DVD-R are most compatible with the general player.

Remember...you will not be able to copy pre-recorded store bought movies...they are write protected.

We bought a DVD recorder that attaches to our TV and sattelite reciever. We rent PPV movies and record them to disc...and record some from the premium movie channels.

I'd assume this "friend" is like all questions where it's not you it's "for a friend"...

In that case, copying a DVD so you have a backup, in case it gets scratched or something, is a fine idea.

I think so too but in all truth, it really is for a friend. I want to introduce her to this artist but I'm not going to buy another DVD if she may not even like it. If she likes her, the artist wins because she'll buy her music. But that's not why I made the thread. I really just wanted some info.

In that case, loan it to her.

Then you also get to find out if she's a friend if she gives it back.

Otherwise, yes, it's illegal.

I've never cared if it's illegal or not. I don't believe anyone is having food yanked off their table and I download off Rhapsody anyway so I'm paying out the nose as it is.

All you really need to know is that I might work for the Associated Federation of Anti Piracy Div.

It's perfectly legal to make a backup DVD, of any disc you buy! I do it to all mine, in case one gets scratched. I use DVD X and NERO VISION4, they've been able to de code every disc I've done so far. Occasionally I've had a disc with a code not known to either program. If that happens, you play the disc for a few minutes, until the software gets a "handle" on the particular codec used, then it will crack it! Easy peasy, and all legal and above board!! Oh RG, use any brand of DVD-R disc, you set the quality level yourself, when setting up!....
