because we look better in it and in spite of what men say, they always turn their heads when the made-up ones walk by.
I don't even think about it anymmore, it's just part of my uniform. It's not that much anyway.

Sure Novelty, I sometimes go out in public without it. In my 20s I wouldn't have because it was all about looking like ripe pickings and makeup helped but once I grew up and got real, I am who I am with or without mascara and lip gloss. To touch on your other questions, yes it coudl be both vanity and insecurity or it could just be self adornment. I feel better in makeup like I feel better in my favorite outfit. But I do wonder about other women who put the stuff on with a spatula. I have nice skin so I don't wear that junk but I'm guilty of some other things.
Why do men wear cologne? Isn't it the same?

In general, it is a marketing tool.
They are making their product look more attractive.
The other reason is creative expression. It is fun sometimes to paint your face. Hair is the fancy frame you put around it.

Another take:
1. men like beautiful women. Women like men. We have to look as good as possible or we'll get picked over for the next woman because (in my experience) men don't generally go for good personalities and adequate brain cells as often as they should. No offense intended.
2. we wear it for other women. Women are competitive among each other. We all want to be the prettiest because it's expected of us. If you're like me, and being pretty is not an option, you put the stuff on and hope you can slide by on your good graces.

Not you Jesse. I'm sure you look beyond the paint and spackle for the real woman. I'm just saying in my experience I haven't found that much but then I date men much younger than me so that may have something to do with it.

Aww, don't be sad Cher. I'm no beauty queen and I know it. But I do have many other things going for me that some of those beautiful women don't.:sneaky:
Most of my friends are average looking women and they would say the same thing. It's not all about the beauty.
Novelty asks about insecurity. I started wearing makeup in junior high partly because I liked it and partly because I felt like a dog. Then after a while it became just as normal as flossing. When was a teenager I wouldn't even go to the store without curling my hair because I might see Crush of the Month and I couldn't afford to be seen looking normal. *eep* Now I go out without it if I don't feel like putting it on, because if someone would actually judge me based on what my face looks like, I don't want them anyway. I'm older now and that makes a difference.

I wear makeup because it makes me feel good about me. I'd never go to work without it, but I go to the supermarket all the time with a 'naked' face. I feel more confident about myself when I put my best face forward.
Is it insecurity? Vanity? I'm sure some combination of both. But I'm comfortable with that at this point in my life. :-6

I agree with that, Cher

But with your brilliant smile who needs makeup anyway?

I have to laugh about that: I have had so many teeth problems from grinding my teeth at night. Hubby has said that if he knew how much my teeth work was gonna cost, he would have drafted a Dental Prenuptual Agreement for me to sign :p

:wah: :wah: And we've all seen girls with white necks and orange faces!!
When I was a teenager I did the dark eyeliner and heavy eyeshadow thing but never really wore much more than that. When I got into my 20's I learnt how to use foundation and a bit more slap but just couldn't be that bothered tbh.
Now I'm on the downhill run to 40 I wear a little eyeliner and mascara most days bit more if I'm going out. I'm not a natural beauty by any imagination so a bit of slap works wonders.
Make up for me has always been about enhancing and hopefully improving the fairly average face that I was blessed with. I hate to see girls or young women with beautiful young skin piling on slap to hide it. Equally it's a shame to see the real old 'uns looking like clowns!!
Last week my step-daughter was grave digging with her dad - he had to wait for her to put her make up on before she would go!!:wah:

I feel sorry for guys sometimes. Having to kiss a mouthful of lip gloss or to chew off our lipstick must be kind of unappealing.

The reason I called it a "marketing tool" is because thats the idea that the media promotes. That women are objects and that we need to keep ourselves looking like the latest model.

There is a lot more going on in the difference of those two photos than makeup and hair.
Lighting is the key and good positioning of the camera. On photoshoots, at least five different people go through over twenty pages of contact sheets with a loop putting their mark next to the few that pass inspection.

That doesn't change my post.
It's important, imo, for women to realise that these models have teams of people who's job it is to make them look good and, even then, only one photo per contact sheet survives.

I'm reading through the thread, haven't got past this question....
Answer: I go out of the house without it...I don't wear alot of make up normally. I didn't start wearing make up until I was in my early 20's or so...
On a daily basis I wear mascara, light foundation, eye shadow and blush and lipstick. and all neutral colors.
I understand both sides of the discussion here. My defense would be to enhance my face, to lift up/cover up wrinkles. I don't consider myself vain at all because I wear make-up.
I believe its a way of us taking care of ourselves, feeling good about our appearance. There is nothing wrong with that:)
