US-led coalition forces in Babylon crushed part of the ancient Iraqi city's 2,600-year old brick-paved streets with their tanks and used soil containing archaelogical fragments to fill sand bags, according to a British Museum report.

The Museum is concerned that the 6,000 strong international force under Polish command based in the ancient centre of civilization, the report said.

The remains of Babylon, one of the world's most important archaelogical sites, have been occupied since the early days of the invasion by US Marines and, more recently, by the Polish-led-contigent. Babylon is 50 miles from Baghdad.

biblical significance yes what has religon got to do with it? All historical sites are worth preserving if possible. Why not bury the temple mount and bulldoze jerusalem as well at least it would stop people fighting over it. Joking aside you asked what the point was I just wondered if you realised it was the same place.

There is no boneing about it, there are biblical bones there. An Atheist can do an archeological dig just as well as a religious person, expect the Atheist would focus on the job, not be blessing the area over and over again? The war, tell them to STOP for a moment, we have found a bone & it might be one from God..

Wasn't it the Polish troops that were bivouacked in the region? Who was trying to pilfer the bricks? Everything would be just fine had not those damn Romans wrought disaster on the inhabitants. Wonder what the Ghengis Khan-ites scooped when they were there?

To me, it was an interesting fact. Doesn't change the war, or even give an opinion on it...just talked about archaeological damage. War is more than just high-flown ideas about right and wrong. It has impact on many areas, and some of us, like myself, are interested in reading about them.



You are often attacking people for what they talk about. You have a fine style of writing that, when used for positive things, is very enjoyable. By using your talent to attack and belittle others, you lose. Perhaps you don't see it.



Back to the topic at hand, it's sad when we damage or destroy ancient history. I really believe we can learn so much from studying the past. I'm taking a intro archaeology class. I recently learned that Romans would set their slaves free - I had heard that before but it never really sunk in. A comparison was drawn between US slavery and Roman. The implication was that things might have gone very differently had we allowed slaves to earn their freedom more often or more easily than we did.



I'm not advocating slavery, but it is an interesting fact. Romans also felt their slaves were part of their own families. I have a hard time getting my mind around that one since slaves could be beaten or even killed for disobedience. Yet, uncovered remains reveal that oftentimes freed slaves would stay with their prior owners until death.



What's that say about human nature? It's intriguiging.

Of course I protest too much! First of all, I'm female, and secondly, I have a decent enough vocabulary to talk incessantly.



Belittling was a strong word, and I apologize for that. My problem is that I never really think anyone is "wrong" - I tend to believe they are following their own priorities. I guess I am a little too touchy lately.
