I want a digital camera

I have decided that when Rick and I are at a point to buy a new toy, I want it to be a digital camera. I feel like the only person in the world without one.
I want to be able to have the instant gratification of seeing my pic as soon as I take it, and being able to post it straight away.
OK, end of whiney rant.

Yes, but what kind?
Compact? - The easiest to use, but some do not have viewfinders.
Prosumer? - In many ways this is the best choice if you are only looking for mementoes, but this type of camera can provide extremely long-focus lenses.
SLR? - By far the most expensive, but not really needed by most amateur photographers.

Chookie, thanks for the input. I have not decided exactly, as it will be a while before I can get one. I just want a simple, user friendly camera. My ideal would be to get one before I go on vacation in November, but that may not happen.
I know it is not the hugest expense we will have, but the past few months have hit us hard. We need to recover a bit more before even thinking of a luxury item.

Alarm clocks, watches, stereos...they've all gone haywire and died!
The alarm clocks do it every single time, within in weeks they go mental, speeding up, going off at three in the morning and then just die!
I use my phone now, but keep it in a different room just to be on the safe side!
I don't even bother trying to have a watch anymore.
sounds like a certian witch is not controlling her powers....

Marie, my wife bought me a great digi pixy taker for my Bday. It's a Nikon Coolpix L3. She bought it at our local Ritz camera store & paid well over $300 for it. It's basically fool proof & takes outstanding pixies. Anyway, when we were shopping for some last minute Christmas gifts for our granddaughter in December, we were at Walmart, & low & behold there was the same exact camera for $139.00!!!:-2 (Nikon Coolpix L3)
So, you may just want to keep that in mind when you're finally ready to get one!

Marie,
I understand completely, about 2 years ago, I had a little extra money right before Thanksgiving and I wanted a digital camera for the longest time. I get very nervous with big purchases that aren't a "necessity", so I didn't really plan on buying one when I did...I caught a sale at Wal-mart, a little Olympus D-535, for a little over $100.00. I LOVE it, it's not overly fancy...but it gets the job done and I definately got my money's worth.
