I have just read a news item over here stating that any film made in the USA that shows people smoking will have to carry an Adult rating

Do you still have the 9am watershed thingy over there? Over here they bleep out all swear words, whatever the time. There are certain channels that they allow swearing but most don't.
Do I have to blindfold my kids when we go out now - so they don't see anyone smoking? I see what they are trying to do - but in reality I can't see how its going to help. Why don't they just increase health awareness programs.

I see what they're going for...look how many decades of film promoted smoking as glamorous and healthy even.
But still...it's bogus. People live the way they live, however undesirably and film should always reflect that, in my opinion. Just show us what you've got and we'll make our own call about it.
This deal reminds me of all those smarmy commercials and educational programs from RJ Reynolds, geared toward "keeping smoking an adult choice." Who the hell's gonna fall for that? Big Tobacco looking out for your kids' welfare?! That's like asking the fox to guard the henhouse.
Stuff like this....is just a farce. All it does it make the world even more of an insincere place to be.

They always have to take it further than need be dont they:wah: I totally understand the smoking ban in public places, and im a smoker, Its coming into force so i will just have to get used to it! But what i cant understand is some council work places are saying there is no smoking on council land as well, so people cant even go outside, and some of the land it would take you 15 mins to get off the land:wah: as far as im aware, the ban in public places is to safeguard the health of non-smikers, fair point, but outside?? Its just red tape really innit?

Good lord. Censorship gone mad is right, since many kids live in a home where their own parents smoke. So what's the point? I live next to a city where they've banned smoking in a car with underage children. I see their point, but it seems stupid since car emissions can be worse than second hand smoke.

I quit smoking on July 1st of last year, and at times when feeling selfish I wish they would ban smoking in film and television. You'd think those feelings would be gone by now, but whereas the physical addiction has waned (the thought of taking smoke into my lungs is repellent now), it seems I'm still in love with the culture of smoking. This flies in the face of logic, I know.

You know, that's why I haven't quit. I know all the health risks and since I work in a nursing home, I see the long-term affects of it everyday in patients. Why do I still smoke? I enjoy the physical act of smoking. I absolutely hate the thought of what it's doing to my lungs and heart, not to mention gums and throat, etc. I guess I'll quit when they make a miracle drug that makes me hate the very act itself. Oh someday.

I'm hip, laneybug. What helped me quit was the fact that my missus was gearing up to try quitting for the umptillionth time in her life and I felt badly for the times she attempted cessation while I was still puffing away. We quit, in effect, for each other. That helps.

I smiled at her and pointed to the big delivery truck sitting in front of her spewing black smoke all over her and her car.
July 1st we have the new law of "no smoking in the public bars of hotels." Now that's a stupid law. I understand it in restaraunts , but the main bar? Looks like the 'garage drinkies' will be starting up again. Beer gardens will be going up all over the place.
the film? huff about nothing. Gosh, how many characters on The Simspons smoke?
Exactly how I feel about the no smoking in cars with children law. Good for you to point out the obvious... just sitting in traffic is bad for your lungs!!
We've had the no smoking in public restaurants and bars in the state I live in for a while now. Actually, I like it. I've never enjoyed going into a bar and seeing a haze of nasty smoke. Sitting in your own smoke is disgusting to me. If you wanna smoke, fine with me, but at least open a damn window or go outside!

Both my fiance and I smoke. I started up again after meeting him. Not an excuse, I know, but I tend to socially smoke. He does want to quit, and we'll probably quit together. Support helps tremendously and if we ever get the urge we can just give each other that "knowing" glare.

It always makes me laugh when people try to draw parallels between smoking and other types of pollutants. Sure, exhaust fumes are probably not too healthy, but the truck is necessary. Your cigarette is not.
Open window or not there's nothing stupid about that "smoking with kids in the car" law.
I'm not going to be real popular for saying this, but I wonder a lot when I see a parent smoking around their kid. Everybody says we should require a license to breed yet some of the very people who say that are the same ones who are lighting up, being a real bad role model for their kids. I mean, nobody's perfect, I know this. But smoking is one of the grossest, stupidest and most dangerous things you can do to your health and that of those around you. So why would you want your kid to see you do it?!
Re: smoking in bars...as much as I support a public ban in all other places, I don't really support a ban on it in bars. Hotel lobbies and such, yes. But if you're in the bar, you're not there for your health anyway so it doesn't matter much.

It is still a workplace. The smoking ban in this country - soon to be extended to England - states that no-one can smoke in any workplace. But it only applies to enclosed spaces.
Having said that, I (an ex-smoker) find it extremely hypocritical of governments to tell people not to smoke. Just consider how much governments make from taxes on tobacco.

Just because you're at a bar to have some drinks doesn't mean you're doing damage to your health. Plenty of people go to bars to socialize and throw back a few and not getting sloshed night after night. Drinking moderately is not a risk to your health.

Man, that's one thing I miss. There's an English traditional* pub here called The Horse Brass that I loved to go to; fish and chips, bangers and mash, Newcastle ale. Smoky as Satan's rec room in there. Since I quit smoking I'll probably never be able to handle it in there.
...Unless the new smoking ordinances here have changed things. Hey, didn't think of that! Maybe I can go in there and enjoy clear lungs while stuffing my arteries in peace!
*Well, as traditional as I assume an English pub to be, having never been to England.

I agree with you completely on that. Subsidizing tobacco farmers while slapping the smoker's hand.

Tonight I was at my favorite restaurant and for the first time ever, I was able to enjoy my dinner without it being ruined by some inconsiderate person's smoke wafting across my plate. Usually it's a veritable smoke pit with a gray haze hanging over the diners. No more, since they put in the smoking ban.
