Changing video format

Hi everyone!

I have an analog VHS video camera and can't afford to purchase one of the fancy digital ones at this time. I do have a VCR/DVD recorder combo that allows me to transfer my VHS videos to DVD, and I also have a DVD player/recorder on my PC. I have sucessfully tranferred my videos to my PC, the problem is they are in a format that nothing recognizes. They will play with Windows media player and Nero viewer, but they won't open in Windows movie maker or Convert movie. It says the file is unkown or corrupt.

There are one of two problems. The first is the the videos start with a menu (numbered 1-5 I think) and you have to select which one you want to play. Could this be confusing the programs into thinking the file is corrupt? The format listed is VOB which is supposed to be compatible with my converter program, and when I click properties it says "compression MPEG-2", so they're either VOB or MPEG-2, I don't know much about either.

I have a converter program that allows me to convert videos to a wide range of formats but it doesn't recognize my file. Is there anything I can do, I'm so close to having my videos online

VOB is the format for DVD's.

You need to convert the files to wmv or avi in order to edit them.
