So I just got off the phone with my cousin in Las Vegas. I haven't seen her since my mom's funeral and at that time I hadn't seen her in probably ten years or so. It's always made me sad because even though she and I are worlds apart and always have been, we did grow up together and we have a lot of memories between us. Religion kind of forced us apart because her church tells her to renounce the rest of us as "worldly." It's been a big wedge in our family. Well she just called and we had a long talk and she asked if I would come and stay with her for a few days when her husband is on his business trips. I said absolutely and she was really surprised that I didn't say no. And pleased. This means I'll get to see her kids whom three of five I haven't even met yet.
I was really grateful that she came down to see my mom and to stand beside me and I had high hopes that we could patch things up between us. Then it seemed like it all went back to the way it was before. I was feeling right bummed out about it all. Now there's been this unexpected turn and I'm so jazzed!!
:-6
Man, I seem to be using FG as my own personal sounding board today. Sorry! But thanks for reading me anyway!!

I'm pleased for you Red but I'm puzzled by what's probably a stupid thought. Why's a family which renounces anything "worldy" living in Las Vegas, of all places?

It is nice when something like that happens. Perhaps our families generally are closer-knit than we imagine.

Thanks Spot! No, your thought isn't stupid at all. My cousin is Mormon and in fact, Las Vegas seems to have a fairly large Mormon population. I find it odd too, what with the casinos and strip shows and all that and I'm not sure how that came to be. Maybe because it's close to Utah and has better employment opportunity, perhaps? In truth, and I'm not saying all Mormons are this way; her inlaws have pretty much made it clear that the problem with us is not so much that we're "worldly" but that we're...not Mormon. And that's been the driving wedge all these years. It's caused a lot of pain among us. But hey, it looks like things are looking up now!!

You may be right, Bill. Thanks.

It's hard to turn your back on blood. For long anyway.
I promised my mom right before she left us, that I'd keep our family together. What was left of it. This is a big start. This would make her very happy. Now if I could just get my other cousins to shake a leg and get over themselves. But I'm working on them.

Red, No offense but I have a few Mormon acquaintances that tell me they like to live there because they pay little or no taxes. The casinos pay.

Oh gosh YZ, no offense taken.

I wasn't aware of the tax situation but that makes good sense. It's just a little odd because I know Mormons have a strict code of conduct yet Vegas is undeniably....uh....scuzzy. No getting around it, it's just... well, Vegas.

As you say, a better employment opportunity - they possibly moved down to build the Hoover Dam in the 1930s.
Whatever, more power to you both for reuniting the family.

Hi M!
I didn't get very much sleep but I'll catch up later. I'm out of lifesavers dangit. Don't know what it is about wintergreen but those things were yummy! But I might be on a sugar binge. I polished off a bag of valentine's day conversation hearts this week too. :-3
I never eat that stuff...
