In the United Kingdom, a chinky (alternatively known as a chinky chonky[1]) is a Chinese takeaway restaurant, or the meal that one buys from such a restaurant. The name "chinky" is the adjectival form of chink, and like chink is an ethnic slur for Chinese people.[2] After several campaigns by the Scottish Executive, more people in Scotland now acknowledge that this name is indirectly racialist.[3] However the BBC Broadcasting Standards Commission held in 2002 that when used as the name of a type of restaurant or meal, rather than as an adjective applied to a person or group of people, the word carries no racialist connotation.[4] These restaurants are known for serving food that no native of China would recognize as Chinese food.[5] Stereotypically, their food is cheap, and the restaurants themselves the subjects of popular prejudice that, according to Gill,[6] makes it "difficult to improve the quality and sophistication of the dishes, or to charge more".
so i can see nothing wrong with title

It appears to be a split opinion on the matter.
Ultimately it is up to the mods if we consider the word offensive.
I'm not saying you meant to use it as a slur. I'm just saying you used a word that FG isn't friendly with.

In N America we say going out for Chinese or Chinese take out.
I don't doubt that it was used in a non racist way but it doesn't change that this is a multinational board and just because the adaptation of the slur has been adopted by the UK as acceptable doesn't mean that it isn't a slur to the rest of the world. It's about the word not the person who used it.

There's no definition for Chinky, and considering the topic I'm guessing you weren't referencing that of a crack or a sound so I wouldn't be so quick in deeming people wrong...
Besides she's already voiced her reasoning on the fact that she felt that what had been posted didn't reflect the integrity of ForumGarden...

I take that back...
There is a definition for Chinky...
AVOID. A derogatory term for a Chinese person, also Chinkey, Chinkie, Chinky. The term is thought to have come from a mispronunciation of the Chinese word Chung-Kuo, meaning China.

The Oxford English Dictionary is quite explicit about acceptable usage.
Chink, noun: A Chinaman. Also attributed (Derogatory).
Chinese, adjective and noun, colloquial (chiefly British): A meal served at a Chinese restaurant; (also) a Chinese takeaway meal. A restaurant serving Chinese food.examples:
1985 Washington Post 13 Jan: That night, a Friday, we gathered in front of the set..with take-out Chinese.
1997 Sunday Post (Glasgow) 4 May: We sort of exist on takeaways. There's a Chinese and a new Indian just opened down the road.

I'll copy this from our PMs since it's relevant and you're continuing to push the issue regardless of other comment:If you have a look at a more recent report like http://www.ofcom.org.uk/research/rad...r/language.pdf (OFCOM's Language and Sexual Imagery in Broadcasting: A contextual Investigation) you'll find this, which might explain why some people think one way and some another:Chink: A term of racial offence/abuse. However, this is polarising. Older and mainly white groups tend to think this is not usually used in an abusive way - e.g. let's go to the Chinky - which is not seen as offensive; younger groups and those from ethnic minorities feel this could be as insulting as 'paki' or 'nigger'.The site rules say "Please do not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-orientated, hateful, threatening, racist, sexist, discriminatory, or otherwise violative of any local or international laws. This includes links in your signature, profile, bookmarks as well as posted images, photos and avatars. Staff will ultimately decide if something is appropriate or not".
"Staff will ultimately decide if something is appropriate or not" is the key phrase there.

We have a graded response with several options. Banning is the most severe. Infractions are milder, warnings milder still. Editing to remove exceptional content is the mildest of the lot. Continually arguing with the referee probably rates an infraction eventually, if that's helpful.

I persionally used too say 'going for a chinky' when talking about getting a chinese take-away. I never used the term as being offensive - nor is anyone else here as far as I can make out.
At the end of the day, if it is likely to offend someone then probably best not to use term. Mods call at the end of the day.
