From what I understand, it is very difficult. Which has always boggled my mind, as so many children need homes. Coincidently, my dad just told me last night that Russia has stopped allowing adoptions. US citizens were adopting Russian children for quite a few years. Russia says they were losing too many of their children. The paper work involved with an adoption from other countries can take years.

My step sis completed a Russian adoption 2 yrs ago and it was expedited expediantly and expediciously.

I meant to type .... countries other than Russia, it can take years. I have a friend here who about 7 years ago, went over to Russia.. scooped her son up, and pretty much brought him home, here. And she is a single parent.

I know a couple, in their late 50s or early 60s, who adopted a baby girl from Japan. The paperwork was frustrating, the wait excruciating, they had to go spend time in Japan and learn about her culture, but they now have a happy, healthy two year old. They got her the week after her first birthday. If you'd like the info about where they can start, I can get it for you.

Are there forums (support or community based) for people wishing to get into this process? Im sure that would also be a big help & comfort to her if the process will be long or frustrating.

Is this a serious question? If so we adopted a little girl from China last year and I could provide some information.

With her permission, I am quoting my daughter in laws response to my question:

They should look at the requirements for any country they might be

interested in adopting from. Some have EXTREME requirements and require

multiple trips and some can deliver the child to the US. They need to look

at age requirements, weight, health, income, etc. for each country as well.

When they have chosen a country they should look in Adoptive Families

magazine or do a web search for international adoption agencies for their

country of choice. I recommend the magazine because the agencies are

reputable and have been checked out and aren't usually crooks like our

agency.

They should also check the state department websites regarding their country

of choice as well. Nepal just shut down indefinately, Guatemala will be

shutting down early 2008, China just changed their rules and cut out half

the people that might have gone there, Kazakhstan requires post placement

reports until the child turns 18, etc
