What does everone think of the smoking ban coming into force next week?

I'm not very happy with it being a smoker myself. Why can't we have smoking pubs and no smoking pubs, then we all have a choice!

I think it's a really good thing, being an ex smoker, I am the worlds worse for moaning about having to inhale other peoples cigarettes, why should I risk secondary smoking health problems and stink like an ashtray, just so someone have have their fix.

how about the staff would it be fair on them having to work all those hours in a health damagine smokey atmosphere





i cant wait to enjoy a pint without going home with all my clothes smelling like an ash tray ,and just think of the space at the bar as all those poor hooked smokers stand outside in the pouring rain :wah: :wah:

If as I say they had smoking and non smoking pubs then people could choose where they wanted to work!

It's a very bad thing. Talk about infringement of liberty. However, I do think that smoking is a Bad Thing, and would support a complete ban, in general, although my tax would go up by about £500 per annum.

There are not many places that you can smoke in,even before the ban.I do think there should be some place to go but we are blamed for everything and certainly being pushed underground.I am thinkiing someone will start smoking dens where after dark we will smoke and drink illegaly in some dark cave.The police will train their sniffer dogs to seek out nicotine, and then we will wallow in Prison for ten years to make sure that we pack it in.

we have a smoking ban here, have had for ages, the area just gets broader and broader, soon smoking will be banned within the 30 mile radius of the city.

Here in Ohio, smoking is banned from all restaurants, bars, private clubs, etc. Why do these businesses continue to sell cigarettes that we are not allowed to smoke?

Each business owner should have a right, their choice, to post a sign either "This is a smoking facility" or "this is a non-smoking facility". Either way you enter at your own risk. The bars that have continued smoking despite the ban, have way more business than the bars that have complied.

Some one knows the answers but no one will admit to it maybe....

Smoking in pubs, restaurants, workplaces, shopping malls, taxis etc has been banned in Australia for yonks.

Big outcry at first that pubs would close etc etc. Infringement of civil liberties.

But I guess living in society is a balance. We compromise some of our civil liberties in order to give others some civil liberties. Like you can't have a million decibel rave party in a suburban neigbourhood at 2am. You are not free to make noise whenever you want. Should you be able to? Isn't this an infringement of the civil liberties of some. Just one example.

Laws - at least in their intention - are to protect and balance rights, so everyone gets a fair go. Some clean air. Some sleep.

What about the number of people that get involved in violent crimes because of alcohol and the innocent people who get injured or even killed because of drunks. No-one has ever turned violent purely because they smoke!

Elly-May, the logic in your argument trumps anything blonde, surreal or spiral I could have come up with.



Anyway, under my proposal to ban EVERYTHING, your points would be covered!

Pub owners face litigation from employees "injured" in the workplace by passive smoking. It's a complex issue, for sure.

I move around a lot and really notice the differences in different countries. In France, everyone seems to smoke and even thought smoking in pubs has been banned this is widely ignored. There are ashtrays on the counter. In restaurants, people light up right next to others who are eating, as a matter of course. In England it's been similar.

Personally I can't see why there can't be some restaurants and some pubs smoke free and others smokerfriendly - with matching staff. Or in small towns where there is only one pub, some designated smoking areas. I've noticed many airports have smoking lounges.

Amazing though, how one gets used to smoke free work places etc.

but you dont get lung cancer from being in the same room as a drunk

some asked who the winner is well its the smoker and the NHS

and you

the smoker has one less cig(fag for us in the uk)and get a better chance of not getting lung cancer...plus he all so has cig in fresh air meaning less smoke inhaled

nhs does not have to cut cancer from so many peoples lungs throuts and mouths

now you get to live with ya love ones a bit longer plus ya dont stink like a ash tray

There's the rub. IMO every establishment should be able to make its own choice, and if the anti-smoking nazis want to go to non-smoking pubs, then they are, as ever, free to do it.

However, logic dictates that a government that wants to protect the people from themselves ought to ban smoking, full stop.

We've had the smoking ban in Scotland for well over a year (thought we were all part of the UK :rolleyes: ) but we wont go into that here :sneaky:

Anyway my point is, its working, sure we smokers were all in a huff about it at first but people soon adapted. I'm glad of it now.

1) The winner is the smoker - yes from the health perspective and money savings, no from others.

2) The NHS is not affected, it will continue as before. However, as smoking effectively pays far more into the NHS than treatment of smokers takes out, funding will have to come from somewhere else.

3) I do not win, I have to pay (perhaps) £500 per year extra tax to make up the shortfall and replace lost revenue to fund the NHS.

I still think that from the government's point of view, smoking ought to be criminalised immediately.

I wasn't talking about the statistics of the NHS, I was referring to what EG said about cutting out cancer and smelling like an ashtray.Both true. Who pays is the least of my concern.
