I don't know if this topic has come up on the forums before. What is your opinion about Knighthoods being given out to Actors, pop stars, footballers etc. These people do not do what they do for any other reason than they enjoy what they do and are very well paid for it.
What do you guys think?

surely and this is just one side of the argument these footballers, pop stars etc are encouraging young people to follow their dreams and get involved in sport, music, drama etc? surely therefore this is a good thing and is to be rewarded, a knighthood however...not sure that is the right reward

Ya gotta go with the footballers and actors or else you end up with a bunch of Sir Spots, Sir Jimbo, Sir Soberanal, Sir Krambo. I mean what other choice is there?:D

What do you think a knighthood is, other than a title for life? It carries no political power, it's a mark of society's respect.

Rather patronising remark from you spot. I respect people who give up there own time for others. ie aid workers who go to dangerous countries. The list goes on.

MiaThat, surely, is what I said, unless I've mis-read your posts in this thread.
1. Name me an actor, pop star or footballer who was knighted and didn't put in some time and effort for others beforehand. Do you think they did it for the knighthood or because they felt it was the right thing to do?
2. Are you suggesting that no aid worker who has gone to dangerous countries has been knighted afterwards because of what they did there? Do you think they did it for the knighthood or because they felt it was the right thing to do?
3. Why do you think the two classes have nothing in common?

I apologise Spot, I seem to have taken the first part of your post the wrong way more than the latter.
Yes you have a point and I respect that. Yes both thought it was the right thing to do.The difference is the aid workers have put their own lives in danger helping people. The stars have put their hands in their pockets and given some of their time to the unfortunates.
This is my opinion I am not saying it is the correct one, this thread was inviting peoples opinions,I don't think there will be much of a response though.

Have footballers, singers etc not made an impression on people's lives? some of them are active in charity works, they do help out what you term as 'unfortunates'

Rolf Harris' knighthood has been too long coming. Maybe she didn't like his painting that much :-3

Fine as far as I'm concerned to give honours to people who raise the profile of this country, work for charities etc but what about civil servants who spend their working lives in Whitehall then get their enormous pension and a knighthood to retire with? Hmmmm, not too convinced they deserve it.
However, I think it would be hilarious to have Sir David and Lady Victoria Beckham!!!

Has anyone actually told them those titles have yet to be bestowed upon them?
