(Edit: Darn! I wrote this without checking first and now I see that there is already a thread on this. And now I can't find the "delete thread" button. Sorry guys.)
Oh the irony...the irony! This guy named Juan Alvarez is despondent because he has ruined his life and his body with drugs, so he parks his SUV on the tracks in California to commit suicide.
Being the cowardly loser that he is, he chickens out at the last minute... but the train derails, smashes into an oncoming train and kills 11 people.
Now get this....He is probably going to be charged with the death penalty, but in the meantime he is on a suicide watch because....
We wouldn't want to have him die before we can execute him!
The funniest thing is that he will probably live for a couple of decades on Death Row, unable to end his life, unable to get any drugs, and living in a small cell.
It's all poetic I tell you!
So..I assume his defense is going to be insanity, what do you think about that?

I think they should just let him go, because just about the entire country is willing to assist him to commit suicide.
~sigh~ Some days, it doesn't pay to be civilized.

lol. See? I think the guys on suicide watch should just "accidentally" forget to watch him for a few days.... and save California about a million dollars worth of trial fees. :wah:

It's okay, Jives...we'll let your blunder ride for now. But don't let it happen again!!! *Glares Menacingly*
Nah, just kidding. Happens all the time; don't worry about it!

it IS ironic, but suicide watch is routine, especially when someone has expressed suicidal ideation. the person on the watch is assigned someone 24/7 to observe him and keep a 15 minute log. the subject is naked except a special suicide "dress" that cannot be used as a rope. they have nothing in cell but a mattress, not even a spoon to eat with except when meal arrives. shower is supervised as well. one reason, besides the obvious, for suicide watch is the legal liability of the jail holding him. it costs a lot of money in lawsuits if someone takes themselves out on their watch. ... a few months ago, while at my county jail, i cut a young guy down who had hung himself with a sheet. he had about 30 seconds left to live at the point i got to him. it isn't pretty. it's not the only suicide attempt i have witnessed or intervened in... it's ugly and i don't wish it on anyone.

Yeah, you're right LC. I was being flippant and inconsiderate. Well, I guess that guy has made his own bed now. And l bet it'll be pretty uncomfortable to lie in.

i don't think you were being flippant at all, or inconsiderate. let me tell you, i know some people i could stick the needle in myself with no qualms. it's too bad alvarez didn't pull a weapon on the police. but suicide in jail is serious business. i know this may sound contradictory to some. but it's really not...i just like to see the law do its work, as slow as it is.

lol! Now that's good comedy!
Is that from some magazine that sells this product to police departments? Can yo imagine having to be the model for that? I'd get another agent! Maybe that's why the people don't look too happy!

I've had several friends commit suicide and have learned that if they have the intent there is no stopping them. Once you are not around they do the deed. It is sad but maybe someday we'll be able to help these people help themselves.
I've always been against the act of capital punishment. Not so much as the taking of a life but because I have always figured that, in the vein of scared straight, seeing pictures of dead killers was nothing when compared to these people seeing someone that is alive and will be in jail 'til the day they die. Costs be damned if it saves people from the self-destructiveness of murder and mayhem.

I can't remember the source but I recall reading that capital punishment did not reduce the number of crimes commited. If this is the case then death row exists only as a form of eye for an eye mentality.
There is the other irony. That a society feels murder is wrong and punishes murder by murdering.
