The only place I have ever put my Skype number on is here - so I am assuming that the requests may have come from here.

Pheasy, people can still access your information and request to be your "friend"...if you don't know them, don't add them is my advice! Everyone I have added I knew before hand who they were....chances are those people are strangers.
